Purpose of the Program

The objectives of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science program are to provide you with a broad education in human biomedical sciences, with the ability to study in specialist areas including cell biology, neuroscience, anatomy, physiology and applied biochemistry, amongst others.  The program is delivered in face to face mode and requires on campus attendance.

In addition to a fundamental understanding of biomedical sciences, at the completion of the degree, you should have an understanding of the research process and have experience in modern technologies in biomedical research.

This program will equip you for further study in the health professions, for employment in biomedical research, or for further training to qualify for employment as a secondary school teacher. 

In your final year you will undertake BIOL2357 Practical Biomedical Sciences, which is a capstone course where you will be assessed on a research project undertaken independently in a workplace setting (which could be either a laboratory at RMIT or a setting outside the University) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the RMIT AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science will be guaranteed entry into the BP231 Bachelor of Biomedical Science program with 120 credit points (=10 courses) of credit. 

NB: While the total value of the credit offered exceeds 1 standard year of full time study, the amount of time required to complete the remaining study may exceed 2 years.

BP231P10 - Bachelor of Biomedical Science plan has been discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 2 2022.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalents web page.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 —  a study score of at least 20 in Chemistry; and a study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematics (any) or Physics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

Graduates may be eligible for membership of a number of Australian professional societies including the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT), and the Molecular and Experimental Pathology Society of Australasia (MEPSA).

Many of the teaching staff within the program are (or have been) practicing industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks.  This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
