Purpose of the Program

The BP320PEC Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) offers you a Birth-12 qualification allowing you to work in a diverse range of primary and early childhood contexts both locally and internationally. These include primary schools, early learning centres in schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, industry and government sectors. It prepares you for the dynamic and challenging world of education. It provides you with globally transferable skills and a qualification that can lead you to practising as a teacher in Australia and overseas. You will experience a variety of contemporary, interactive learning and teaching approaches, including both face-to-face and online delivery modes. You will have the opportunity to participate in a range of innovative Professional Experience practices within a variety of educational settings that integrate theory and practice. This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the Bundoora Campus.

You will undertake a series of work integrated learning experiences in schools, early childhood and other educational settings throughout the program. During these experiences you will progressively demonstrate achievement of each descriptor of the AITSL Standards for Graduating Teachers. You will also undertake a capstone experience in the final year that comprises your final teaching placement and an independent action research project into an aspect of your teaching practice. During your final teaching placement you will demonstrate effective classroom teaching practice including planning, teaching, assessing and reflecting. You will conduct an action research project into an aspect of your teaching practice during your final teaching placement and report on the impact the development of your practice has on student learning.

Successful compeltion of your final teaching performance assessment and a record of succesful performance against all AITSL Graduate Teacher Standards are requirements for graduation.

On completion of the program you will be a professional practitioner within the field of education possessing a  broad knowledge of learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment with expertise in either English/Literacy, Mathematics/Numeracy. You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and to teach in schools and early childhood settings, however you will have  knowledge, skills and experience to also work in private enterprise, government agencies and community based organisations. You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support your teaching practice. Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation guarantees entry into this program subject to completing the Casper test.

Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in post-graduate programs at RMIT University, as well as Masters by Research (MR209) programs, subject to program entry requirements.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Entrance requirements

This plan has been discontinued. The final intake into this plan was semester 1, 2023.

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent with an ATAR (or equivalent) of 70, inclusive of selection rank adjustments.

Prerequisites

  • Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics.
  • A study score of at least 30 in Units 3 and 4 English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

International English language requirement

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 7.5 with a minimum score of 7.0 in reading and writing and 8.0 in speaking and listening.

Casper Test

All applicants must sit the Casper test. Casper is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. Working with children check

Please note that to undertake the Professional Experience courses in year one to year four of the program, you must provide a satisfactory Working With Children Check (WWCC) . If you are not able to provide this, you will be unable to complete the program. For further information about obtaining a WWCC, visit http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Vaccinations

Some child care centres may require you to provide evidence of vaccination prior to undertaking professional experience.

Literacy and numeracy test 

In order to register with VIT, students will be required to pass the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teachers prior to graduating from their program. This test is mandated by the Federal Government and is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Students are allowed a maximum of three attempts and must be successfully completed by the end of the second year of the program.   For more information please see https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/

External accreditation and industry links

The BP320PEC Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (www.vit.vic.edu.au).

In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Successful completion of this program will allow you to apply for Provisonal Registration with VIT. To obtain Provisional Registration, graduates are required to complete a VIT Registration application form and submit it to the Institute. Further information on the registration process and requirements can be found here.

Industry Links

The program has strong links with a range of partner schools and settings who host our students on professional experience, work with us to develop and deliver school-based teaching and participate in research projects. The program team regularly consults with a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) that consists of high profile industry representatives, including RMIT Partnership schools. Part of the PAC’s brief is to ensure that the program's links with primary school standards and practice remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

The University Library has many services, facilities and study spaces for you to use. There are extensive scholarly resources such as books, journals and online videos either linked from within your online courses or available from the Library website. The Library is focused strongly on assisting students with academic skills development, including research, communication and mathematics skills. There is online assistance via the Ask-a-Librarian chat service, online guides or take advantage of face-to-face help at each of the library sites. Each library site has individual and group study rooms, computers and print facilities to support your study and learning needs.
