Purpose of the Program


The Certificate IV in EAL (Further Study) is part of an academic preparation program at RMIT University. It is for people from non-English speaking backgrounds who wish to improve their speaking, listening, reading, writing and study skills. The program aims to provide you with the cultural understanding, advanced English language, and tertiary study skills to participate in further study contexts.

Articulation and pathways

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program.

Once students have successfully completed this program, they may choose to:

  • undertake further language studies
  • apply for VE or Higher Education programs offered by RMIT and other institutions
  •  or seek employment.


Please note:  The Tertiary Preparation Program unit within the School of Education offers weekly workshops to currently enrolled students to support their employment and further study goals and pathway.

Entrance requirements



This certificate is for people 16 years (on 1 January in year of commencement) and over who come from a non-English speaking background and want to improve their English, or who have had an interrupted education and/or want to develop further study skills.

As a general guide to entry in this program, you should have literacy and numeracy skills to a minimum Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). You will be required to attend an interview to demonstrate you fulfil these literacy and numeracy requirements.

External accreditation and industry links

This nationally accredited curriculum is designed for adults learning English as an additional language.


The curriculum is managed and reviewed by a State body comprising current providers: Department of Education and Early childhood Development, Curriculum Maintenance Manager, TAFE institutes, “Learn Local” providers.

Industry links are maintained through advisory committees such as Tertiary Preparation Programs Advisory Committee (PAC). This committee considers and advises the university on matters associated with the development, delivery and assessment of the programs delivered by Tertiary Preparation Programs in the School of Education. The program is also a member of the Victorian EAL Course Advisory Committee (CAG) and the TAFE Careers Practitioners Network.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of stationery, language apps and a laptop.

Library resources and services
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site as well as many of RMITs computer labs, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop, you can access the RMIT University wireless network throughout most RMIT buildings.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
