Purpose of the Program

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment will prepare you for employment in the training and assessment industry. Graduates are employed in a range of industry contexts, typically to:

  • design and develop training programs
  • deliver training programs
  • assess training participants and those undergoing a Recognition of Prior Learning process

Currently graduates of this program are employed by a range of organisations including private Registered Training Organisations, government bodies, enterprises with internal training programs, community organisations and TAFE institutes. The program will provide you with a practical skills in training and assessment together with sound theoretical concepts in learning and assessment. In the program you will be encouraged to make connections with the program content and assessment tasks to your field of vocational expertise.

Articulation and pathways

The Training and Assessment (TAE) Training Package, which includes the Certificate IV Training and Assessment, does not mandate particular pathways for the qualifications provided. Entry points and progression rely heavily on the background, experience and qualifications currently held by the learner. Choices in the individual qualifications contained in the Training Package associated with training and assessment, specialisations in language, literacy and numeracy, management or international education services will depend on the preferences and needs of the learner.

You may wish to deepen your skills and knowledge in vocational education and training after completion of the Certificate IV Training and Assessment (TAE40116) by undertaking the Diploma of Vocational Education and Training TAE50116 or the Diploma of Training Design and Development TAE50216. Whilst there is no formal pathway agreement, students will be elgible for a credit transfer for Design and develop assessment tools (TAEASS502).

Entrance requirements

Demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification. Evidence may be a certified copy of the qualification or evidence of industry knowledge and experience described in a personal statement or may include supporting documentation such as a letter of support from an employer.

External accreditation and industry links

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, TAE40116 is the entry level qualification for trainers and assessors in the national Vocational Education and Training (VET) system.

At RMIT, we ensure that the Certifcate IV in Training and Assessment TAAE40116 program is responsive to current industry needs through its Industry Advisory Committee. This committee represents a broad cross section of the training industry and advises on training and assessment, ensuring that the program produces graduates who have the skills needed in the field. The program team members are also members of the Victorian Practitioners Network (VPN) which consists of training providers, trainers and assessors of the Training and Assessment Training Package, as well as industry stakeholders who meet regularly to discuss current policy and practice in the field.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
