Purpose of the Program

The program introduces you to, and develops, the underpinning skills for legal and justice professional practice. Core skills include:

 

- a way of working that is clear, concise, accurate, complete and factual 
- professional writing skills to communicate effectively within a legal context
- working with clients using interpersonal, professional protocols
- skilled objective questioning techniques
- professional writing skills that are factual and use appropriate syntax, tone, and is formal and objective
- academic literacies
- confident and knowledgable study application and production 


These skills prepare you to successfully access and participate in higher-level qualifications, and enhances your further study prospects. The program is designed as a pathway for school leavers who did not attain a required skill level, those who wish to change career, or for those who have not studied for some years. 
The objective of the Legal stream is to prepare you for further study and to create pathways into the fields of legal practice and justice. To support this, upon successful completion of the qualification, guaranteed pathway is available (certain criteria must be met) into the RMIT Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice.

Successful completion of this program provides a guaranteed pathway into the Advanced Diploma in Legal Practice.

Please Note: To achieve a guaranteed pathway, you are required to successfully complete all units of competency.

Entrance requirements

 Minimum entry requirements.

There are no minimum entry requirements.

However you should have the minimum language, literacy and numeracy skills that align to Level 3 in ACSF. This means that you can:

  • Read and interpret information in texts
  • Write about ideas and information
  • Speak formally and informally
  • Interpret simple mathematical information

Applicants are encouraged to submit a personal statement outlining:

  • their reasons for wanting to study this program
  • their intended career path
  • their personal strengths and attributes relevant to the program
  • details of any related work or voluntary experience

External accreditation and industry links

RMIT was a member of the steering committee that developed this nationally recognised qualification. It is owned by the Department of Education, Higher Education and Skills Group (HESG), Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board and is maintained by the  Curriculum Maintenance Manager (CMM) - General Studies and Further Education. The program develops the skills and knowledge required by specific learner groups to enhance their education prospects in Legal related fields.

The program implementation and program delivery is informed by both the Industry Advisory committee, School of Global, Urban and Social Sciences and the School of Business.  It is also advised by the Tertiary Preparation Industry Advisory Committee in the School of Vocational Design and Social Context.

There are no external accreditation bodies with this qualification.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.You will require a laptop for this program.

Library resources and services:

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study spaces provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books.

Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library and throughout the university.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
