Purpose of the Program

The program develops your academic skills, knowledge and confidence, required to access and participate in higher-level qualifications, and enhances your further study prospects. The program is designed as a pathway for school leavers who did not attain a required skill level, those who wish to change career, or for those of you who have not studied for some years.

The objective of the Science stream is to prepare you for further study and to create pathways into the field of science. To support this, upon successful completion of the qualification, guaranteed pathways are available (see Articulation and Pathways).

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of the Certificate III in Science guarantees entry into this program.

Successful completion of this program provide guaranteed entry into the following RMIT programs:

  • Associate Degree in Applied Science*
  • Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques
  • Diploma of Nursing**
  • Diploma of Conservation and Land Management
  • Diploma of Dental Technology

* Students must have successfully completed the program and the unit MATH7081/VU22074 Use a range of techniques to solve mathematical problems to be eligible for guaranteed entry into the Associate Degree in Applied Science.

** For the Diploma of Nursing pathway, specific English language requirements apply. Please refer to the program page for further details.

Entrance requirements

There are no minimum entry requirements.

However you should have the minimum language, literacy and numeracy skills that align to Level 3 in ACSF. This means that you can:

  • Read and interpret information in texts
  • Write about ideas and information
  • Speak formally and informally
  • Interpret simple mathematical information

Applicants are encouraged to submit a personal statement outlining:

  • their reasons for wanting to study this program
  • their intended career path
  • their personal strengths and attributes relevant to the program
  • details of any related work or voluntary experience

External accreditation and industry links

RMIT was a member of the steering committee that developed this nationally recognised qualification and has also been on subsequent review steering committees. It is owned by the Department of Education, Higher Education and Skills Group (HESG), Adult Community and Further Education  (ACFE) Board and is maintained  by the  Curriculum Maintenance Manager (CMM) - General Studies and Further Education. The program develops the skills and knowledge required by specific learner groups to enhance their education prospects in Science related fields.

The program implementation and program delivery is informed by both the School of Vocational Engineering Health and Sciences Industry Advisory Committee, Industry Advisory Committee and the School of Vocational Design and Social Context. These committees are made up of science industry representatives, and further study and community representatives.

There are no external accreditation bodies with this qualification.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study spaces provided by the Library and other dedicated spaces within the university. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network throughout the university.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding  electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
