Purpose of the Program

The Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Civil Engineering Design) enables you to gain basic knowledge and hands-on technical skills in preparation for employment in the field of Civil Engineering.  

The graduates of this qualification at RMIT University will be able to:

  • recall and apply engineering and scientific principles in designing mechanical, civil and manufacturing engineering applications based on a well-founded specialist knowledge domain
  • analyse, diagnose, design and execute judgments with respect to mechanical, civil construction and manufacturing solutions that have a basis in engineering technology
  • prepare a brief on technical solutions and concepts with options for various engineering environments and contexts
  • integrate and solve interfacing problems between disparate technical or engineering systems
  • manage complex projects on time and within budget
  • manage autonomously a range of technical objectives within organisations that have outputs based on engineering applications.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the C4411ENG Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation are guaranteed entry into the C6162 Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Civil Engineering Design).

Further study

Graduates of the RMIT Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Civil Engineering Design) C6162 are guaranteed entry and will receive credit for 144 credit points into BH077 Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) (Honours). (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points).

Entrance requirements

RMIT University-specific entry requirements 

 

For domestic cohorts 

  • Successful completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent)  

OR 

  • Successful completion of Post-Secondary studies in a related field (Certificate II or above) 

OR 

  • At least 6 months of full-time work experience in a related field as per a detailed resume (or part-time equivalent).

  

For international cohorts  

All direct overseas student applicants to RMIT are assessed to ensure they meet the appropriate language proficiency at the pre-engagement stage by specialist staff in the RMIT Admissions team. This is undertaken prior to issuing Student Offers and Confirmation of Enrolment for Student Visa purposes. These assessments by RMIT admissions are mapped from globally recognised language testing conventions to RMIT IELTS entry requirements for the program. Individual language assessments for each student are retained in Studylink and can be obtained from the International Admissions Team via:  intladmissions@rmit.edu.au 

 To study this program, applicants will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests: 

  •  IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0) 
  •  TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with a minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing) 
  •  Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36) 
  •  C1 Advanced: minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component.

External accreditation and industry links

This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia for the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Civil Engineering Design) program. Graduates of the program will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia at the Engineering Associate level https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au

The Future Technology cluster has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) , which is the main link between the program and industry. The committee includes members from many major Australian civil engineering consulting companies and government instrumentalities. The committee meets yearly and provides feedback on the currency of the programs, and the changing needs of the industry. Also, the industry representatives provided their input into the design of this program. In addition, IAC actively contributes to the cluster through participation in industrial seminars and visits, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program, you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University, you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course-related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service, you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop, you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.
