Purpose of the Program

The Advanced Diploma of Accounting qualification is designed to reflect professional accounting job roles in financial services and other industries. It contributes to, but does not encompass, educational requirements for providing tax agent services.

It allows the individual to apply theoretical and technical skills in a range of situation and to display initiative and judgement in planning activities.  They have autonomy in performing complex operations and can be responsible for planning, co-ordinating and evaluations the work of others within broad but well-defined parameters.

The primary pathway from this qualification is employment in accounting job roles with duties such as:

  • introducing and maintaining accounting systems
  • maintaining internal control systems
  • preparing financial statements for a non-reporting entity
  • preparing tax returns
  • reporting on business performance
  • managing small teams
  • developing business plans
  • preparing accounting reports for management.

The program can also provide training if students are already working in the accounting industry, allowing them to broaden their knowledge and career prospects to improve their chances of job progression and/or obtaining a place in a Degree-level program (if desired).

Articulation and pathways

Upon successful completion of the C6163 Advanced Diploma of Accounting (FNS60217) qualification you may gain entry into one of the accounting streams higher education degrees at RMIT.

You will be eligible to receive advanced standing for approved courses. This agreement is for RMIT Business Vocational Education program graduates commencing their RMIT College of Business Higher Education program only.

Entrance requirements

Minimum Academic requirement

Students wishing to undertake the Advanced Diploma of Accounting (FNS60217) must have completed one of the following:

  1. Completion of FNS50215 Diploma of Accounting; OR
  2. Completion of FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting; OR
  3. Completion of the FNSSS00014 Accounting Principles Skill Set (Release 2) AND FNSSS00015 Advanced Accounting Principles Skill Set

International students - English language requirements

International students are subject to meeting University English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0)
  • TOEFL (Paper Based Test): minimum score of 530 (TWE 3.5)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component.

External accreditation and industry links

The development of the program structure and the choice of elective units appropriate to the Accounting industry were informed by a Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) comprised of representatives of the Accounting sector and RMIT educators.

This qualification includes units that comprise an approved Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) course in Australian taxation law and Australian commercial law, both of which are required as part of the academic requirements for registration as a Tax Agent. Those seeking registration as a Tax Agent with the TPB should check current registration requirements with the TPB as these requirements are reviewed regularly.

Academic staff maintains close contact with the Accounting industry though various professional development activities.  Sessional staff generally maintains employment or operate their own business in the relevant industry.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
