Purpose of the Program

Information security and assurance forms a vital part of organisational responsibilities. In today’s networked world it is more relevant than ever. From the latest internet worm to identity theft, the danger is no more than a mouse click away. The detailed approach of the Masters program is aimed at information security managers by providing the principles underlying the components of information security systems. The program also applies to technical specialists who are interested in the implementation or critical evaluation of information security systems.

You will learn about wireless LAN security, the Advanced Encryption Standard, RSA, elliptic curve cryptography, smartcards, biometrics and information systems risk management. There are opportunities for internships in the information security industry for students of the Masters program.

As a graduate of the Master of Cyber Security you will be able to: apply a range of mathematical, analytical, algorithmic and computational techniques; model and critically evaluate a range of information security systems and processes (hardware or software based or hybrid) which operate on a diverse range of media (optical, wireless, wired); and use a variety of protocols (EFTPOS, INTERNET, CCITT) in business or personal communications, keeping in mind the importance of ethical values in this service oriented field.

Upon graduation you will be well placed to be able to perform these roles in either government or private organizations. Furthermore, you will have developed the capacity to evolve with industry as existing information systems become more complex and more accessible to an increasing variety of users.

You will undertake a capstone experience in the Stage C course INTE1130 Industry Awareness Project, in which you will conduct a substantial industry-oriented project as a part of a team that must demonstrate elements of research and enquiry, including a literature review, analysis and discussion. In Stage D of the program you will also undertake the capstone experience course INTE1131 Industry Linkage Project, which allows you to implement the ideas that were researched in INTE1130, and engage with an industry partner.

This program is delivered on campus; some courses may be available online.
