Purpose of the Program

This program has been designed to build your advanced knowledge to design and deliver energy efficient and sustainable buildings. It emphasises the application of theory to practice and will build your capability to critically engage with and respond to current and emerging industry issues and trends, and economic and sustainability policy imperatives.

The program will build your specialised knowledge of sustainable building design and technologies, energy efficiency in buildings and the management of sustainable building projects.  Collaborative projects are designed to encourage the development and exchange of disciplinary expertise, information and approaches to energy efficiency and sustainable building.

Courses in this program are designed to enhance your leadership capacity, including your ability to articulate, justify and implement sustainability strategies and solutions across diverse industry sectors. You will develop your capability to professionally communicate complex sustainability strategies across diverse levels of management, including industry leaders, and to engage effectively within interdisciplinary teams to realise project outcomes and enhance sustainability practice. The program develops key knowledge that spans diverse disciplines including building science, building energy engineering and project management. The program builds the capacity of professionals from diverse fields to develop their understanding of the delivery and operation of sustainable building projects. The final year research and industry project courses provide you with opportunities to engage with building industries as you undertake a research or industry investigative project.

This program prepares you to work in multidisciplinary teams involved in the design, development and implementation of solutions for low environmental impact buildings. Upon graduation you will be able to work at a high level as a manager, designer or engineer of energy efficient and sustainable building projects or developments, and apply your technical design and project management capabilities across key industries and sectors. You can expect to work in areas like energy management, building sustainability assessment, facilities management, environmentally sustainable design (ESD), facade engineering and building energy engineering.

Successful completion of this program provides a pathway to a PhD.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of GC163 Graduate Certificate in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building guarantees entry into this program with 48 credit points of exemption (equivalent to one semester full time study). 

Successful completion of GD189 Graduate Diploma in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building guarantees entry into this program with 96 credit points of exemption (equivalent to one year full time study). 

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Upon successful completion this program, you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, including Postgraduate Research programs, subject to each program’s entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a discipline that demonstrates knowledge and skills in construction, technology, engineering, management, architecture or design; OR significant work experience or professional practice related to energy efficiency, sustainability or building and construction.

As a guide, significant experience would generally be a minimum of three years of experience in middle to upper management roles that related to energy efficiency, sustainability or building and construction

To have your professional experience considered your application must include:

  • a CV
  • a personal statement that demonstrates your academic foundation for Masters study. This may include: details on how your professional experience relates to the program; demonstration of critical thinking in personal or professional practice; communication and problem solving skills.

English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

The Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building program consults closely with the Program Advisory Committee (PAC), whose membership is drawn from the construction and property industry. Ongoing engagement with the PAC ensures that this program is relevant to industry needs and expectations.

Integrating industry expertise into the coursework is a key distinguishing aspect of this program.  Adjunct and visiting staff from local and international practices are invited to participate as guest lecturers to ensure that you are exposed to the latest industry developments. Professionals in related industries such as building design, project management, urban planning, local and national government representatives as well as academic research partners provide you with exposure to current industry practice.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
