Purpose of the Program

The aim of the program is to provide writers and publishing professionals with specialised knowledge, high-level mentoring, critical thinking and globally transferable skills – producing flexible and confident graduates in both creative and professional writing practice and the publishing industry. This program, which is strongly practice-led, industry-focused and international in orientation, has been designed to challenge and prepare you for the changing nature of the writing and publishing industries.

The core of the program, the Bowen Street Press, is a real world, student-led publishing house that encompasses everything from digital and online through to print. Through studio-based practice and a series of projects over your degree, reflecting your individual interests as writers of non-fiction, fiction or poetry and/or as editing and publishing professionals, you will work within the real-world structure of a 21st century publishing house.

The program offers a capstone experience in both the practice-led Bowen Street Press studio and the research-focused Professional Research Project. Both these experiences will enable you to synthesise and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice and demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes. The program is offered on campus in face to face mode of delivery.

On successful completion of the program, you will be a professional practitioner with specialised knowledge of the writing and publishing industry. You will be able to analyse issues, work with others, communicate informed ideas and apply independent judgement to problems within a writing and publishing context.

Graduates of this program can expect to work in professional and leadership roles, both local and international, in a broad range of areas such as writing and/or content curation for print and new media (games, apps, ebooks, zines and the net); self-employment as writers and/or editors; and traditional publishing such as books and magazines within the trade, educational and corporate sectors and other non-traditional boutique publishing areas.
