Remote access to Library e-resources

RMIT University Library has a number of electronic information resources, the use of which is restricted to RMIT staff and students. The resources include a large variety of databases, past exam papers, electronic reserve and electronic journals.

Place of access

  • Outside RMIT (home/work computers using any Internet Provider or RMIT Remote Dial-in Service [RDS]) - Use your NDS
  • RMIT University Library (any site) - Access as usual except for restricted access databases
  • Anywhere on RMIT campus (school labs, office computers) - Access as usual except for restricted access databases

Please note: The Library Catalogue is usually available 24 hours a day, except for a brief period between 24:00 and 00:15 when we perform maintenance.

Access problems?

Firewall issues

If you are behind a firewall, try the links below for access to Search It and Find It e-resources:

    • Search It (http://p8331-searchit.lib.rmit.edu.au.ezproxy.lib.rmit.edu.au/V?func=find-db-1&force_login=y)
    • Find It (http://p9003-findit.lib.rmit.edu.au.ezproxy.lib.rmit.edu.au/sfx_local/az/)

Login not working?

If you are having trouble logging in you might need your password reset. Follow the advice on the managing your password page.

Still having problems?

Contact us using details on Ask a Librarian page. Please be as specific as you can as to the nature of the problem. For example, tell us which database/s you were trying to access, quote error messages you have received, etc. This will help us find the solution much faster.

Browser configuration settings (cookies) and the security certificates

When accessing our online resources outside RMIT your browser will ask you to accept a security certificate. The certificate appears as a pop-up window. The purpose of the certificate is to ensure that your login and password details are encrypted. Your browser also needs to accept or enable cookies. Cookies are small lines of text that are stored with your browser's configuration files. If your browser has the accept/enabled cookies option turned off this will need to be updated. If you are not sure how to do it, go to How to Enable Cookies from Google.

RMIT's RDS (Remote Dial-in Service)

Instructions on how to configure your PC, modem and browser to use RDS can be found at Remote Dial-in Services at the RMIT ITS home page. Using the RDS still requires you to have an NDS login.

Internet Service Providers (ISP)

Most Internet Service providers are compatible with the security process that operates with the remote access system. In circumstances where it seems your Internet Service is causing an access blockage you should submit a question via our Ask a Librarian service so that we can rule out other technical or login issues.

Contact your ISP Technical Support to ensure that access to the following ports is enabled: 80, 443, 8331 and 9003.

In some cases an effective workaround for connection problems is to use the RMIT remote dial-in service.
