SciFinder

SciFinder includes both the Chemical Abstracts and Medline databases, and provides the most accurate and comprehensive chemical and related scientific information including: journal articles, patents, substance data, chemical reactions and regulatory data, chemical suppliers and biomedical literature. It covers literature from the following disciplines:

  • Chemistry
  • Chemical engineering
  • Polymer engineering
  • Physics
  • Metallurgical engineering
  • Pharmaceutical sciences
  • Medicine
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Sports engineering

Access option 1: SciFinder web version (2 concurrent users)

SciFinder web version is the full version of SciFinder formerly available only to commercial subscribers. It offers features not available in the client version, including alerting services.

You need to register first to access the web version of SciFinder. After completing the registration form you will receive an email asking you to confirm your registration by clicking on the link provided in the email. The email link is valid for a short time only so be sure to confirm your registration as soon as you receive the email.

Access option 2: SciFinder Scholar client version access instructions (2 concurrent users)

Note that the client version of SciFinder may eventually be phased out by CAS so we encourage researchers to become familiar with the web version.

PC user instructions

On-Campus PC users:

1. Launch SciFinder.

2. When asked if you want to run or save this file – select Run

Off-Campus PC users:

1. Download SciFinder Scholar setup file (EXE, 17,288 KB) and follow the installation instructions.

2. Go to the authentication screen and enter your NDS login and password. You should then be presented with a screen indicating you have 2 minutes to launch SciFinder Scholar.

3. Leave the IE/Firefox session open and launch SciFinder database via either the desktop icon or menu item created during this install.

Dial Up Users – Download the SciFinder Scholar setup file to a USB on campus.

Mac user instructions

On-Campus Mac users:

1. Download SciFinder Scholar on-campus setup file (DMG, 14,917 KB) and follow the installation instructions.

2. Launch SciFinder software.

Off-Campus Mac users:

1. Download SciFinder Scholar off-campus setup file (DMG, 14,917 KB) and follow the installation instructions.

2. Go to the authentication screen and enter your NDS login and password. You should then be presented with a screen indicating you have 2 minutes to launch SciFinder Scholar.

3. Leave the Safari/Firefox session open and launch SciFinder database by double clicking on it in the Applications folder.

Dial Up Users – Download the SciFinder Scholar setup file to a USB on campus.

Access problems?

Web version: If you encounter a Security Certificate Validation Error/Violation:

  • In IE click on the link to "Continue to this website"
  • In Mozilla Firefox add a security certificate exception.

Client version: If you see an error indicating there is a connection problem with the client version, it is most likely the 2 minutes has expired. Please try again.
