Ben Ommundson is living the dream after being selected to pitch to DreamWorks Animation.
One of five successful applicants, Mr Ommundson beat hundreds of aspiring animators vying for a chance to take their work from sketch-to-screen with one of the world's biggest movie studios.
As part of the prize, Mr Ommundson collaborated with key DreamWorks creatives in an exclusive industry masterclass on the process and technical considerations embedded in upcoming features.
The winners also developed their shorts under the guidance of Melbourne producer, Anthony Lucas, and have recently had their first pitch meeting with Steve Hickner from DreamWorks via videolink.
A follow up meeting with DreamWorks creatives is scheduled for September.
An experienced animator, Mr Ommundson describes his work as a quirky collision of fantasy and science fiction influences.
"I've been animating for about a year and a half, mostly out of Melbourne animation studio Oh Yeah Wow in Brunswick," he said.
"We've made music videos, advertisements and short films using traditional animation, stop motion, 3D and motion graphics. I've just been working with some Sydney studios, and I've also done some international work."
Approaching his final semester, Mr Ommundson describes studying at RMIT as instrumental in empowering innovative young animators towards grounding fantastical ideas into practical realities.
"The staff of the Bachelor of Animation and Interactive Media are all, without exception, excellent and supportive teachers who have really put me on my path," he said.
"After ten years in the sun, I want to teach animation, maybe even at RMIT.
"The professional lectures in second year, conducted by young animation professionals from Melbourne, really helped show me where ambitious animators can go and what they can do after graduating."
The Designing Dreams Studio runs alongside DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition, which has taken over the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) at Federation Square until October.
Mr Ommundson is excited by the opportunity to work with one of the world's animation giants.
"It's a load of fun! A great experience to develop my own story and scriptwriting sensibilities and a real killer point on my CV," he said.
