Professors Helen Lingard, Ron Wakefield and Nick Blismas have had their work profiled in the August 2014 edition of International Innovation magazine.
With a readership of over 60,000 professionals – encompassing a wide range of academic, government and industry sectors – International Innovationrepresents a valuable opportunity to increase the profile of the Centre and to communicate research outcomes and achievements to a wider international audience.
The article, titled ‘A safer and healthier working environment’, includes an in-depth interview on the establishment of the Centre, describing the Centre’s collaborative safety research methodology involving active participation of industry research partners. The Centre’s ‘life cycle’ approach focuses on the translation of identified industry safety problems into applied research projects (known as Research-to-Practice). Completed research outcomes are then translated and shared with industry contacts, ensuring that the Centre contributes to the ongoing development of industry best practice.
The Centre’s current international collaborative research with Virginia Tech was highlighted as an example of effective ongoing industry research partnership. Funded by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research provides an opportunity to benchmark and compare current design safety practices in the Australian and US construction industries. The project will culminate in the publication of a series of Research-to-Practice guides to ensure effective translation to industry-relevant outcomes. Several other notable achievements by the Centre are mentioned in the article. These include an ARC Future Fellowship awarded to Professor Lingard to undertake a program of applied safety research; and the publication of the Centre’s Guide to Best Practice for Safer Construction. The Guide to Best Practice is the most frequently downloaded document from RMIT University’s research repository and has been accessed from over 70 countries.
