RMIT University has partnered with Oliver Hume and Villawood Properties for an Industry Learning Day for property students.
Third and fourth year Property and Valuation students from the School of Property, Construction and Project Management put theory into practice during visits to new developments in Melbourne's south-east.
The day focused on visits to Oliver Hume Property Fund's Illixir development in Cheltenham and Villawood Properties' Marriott Waters community in Lyndhurst.
Students had the unique opportunity to undertake site inspections, analyse approaches and case studies, meet key stakeholders and view presentations from industry professionals.
Oliver Hume's National Head of Research, Andrew Perkins, said the day was a very beneficial opportunity for the students to engage with active projects.
"We saw this as a great opportunity for students to view the behind-the-scenes planning and work involved in getting a development of this magnitude off the ground," he said.
The activities allowed students to consolidate the knowledge covered throughout their program including property development process, planning requirements, property law, investment options, finance and feasibility analysis.
Villawood Properties' Development Manager, Nancy Bickerton, stressed the importance of industry-based learning and gaining experience on site.
Students explored the Marriott Waters wetland walk.
"It is crucial for students to gain exposure to every element of the processes behind development to truly understand the complexities involved with property planning," she said.
RMIT Property Program Manager, Judith Callanan, said the day was an excellent learning opportunity for the students.
"Being able to walk and drive around the estates provided the students with the context for their studies - many students commented on how valuable they found the day in understanding the intricacies involved in the property development process," she said.
Oliver Hume and Villawood Properties have been proud partners of RMIT for a number of years on multiple initiatives for students in property.
