The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)ITAS is a specialised tutorial program established as part of a commonwealth government initiative to enhance the educational outcomes for Indigenous people. Tuition is available only for courses (subjects) in a student's formal education program (course) and not part of short or bridging courses. The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) provides bulk funding to Australian tertiary institutions for administering the program locally, to meet the tutoring needs of its Indigenous students. The program is managed by the Ngarara Willim Indigenous Centre at RMIT University. Students in their first year of tertiary study are especially encouraged to make use of this service, although it is available to all Indigenous students at any level. Tutorial assistance is available for students who are doing well in their programs, and would like to keep ahead, or for students who feel they need additional tutoring. Tuition sessions can be either individual, or a group made up of students studying the same program (course). The ITAS Coordinator at Ngarara Willim Indigenous Centre is available to arrange tutors across a broad range of program (subject) areas. Tutorial assistance is tailored to meet the particular needs of the individual student or group of students. There is no cost to the students for this service - payment to tutors is administered by DEEWR.
