Coursework program applications

All applicants for postgraduate coursework programs apply using the direct application form except for the Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary) for which applicants apply through VTAC.

RMIT University is offering Postgraduate Commonwealth Supported Equity Places in postgraduate coursework programs for Australian residents who meet our entrance and equity criteria.

Research Programs

Applications for postgraduate programs by research can be made at any time.

Application for a postgraduate by research program involves three steps:

  1. Application for offer of enrolment
  2. Enrolment
  3. Approval of the research program
  4. Confirmation of candidature

1. Application for Offer of Enrolment

Prospective candidates begin by discussing research topics and the availability of suitable supervisors with the head of the appropriate school. Contact telephone numbers or email addresses are listed on program web pages. Use the search on the Future students page to find a particular program.

Local applicants can apply for both the research program and the Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship by completing the Application for Higher Degree by Research Candidature form and submitting it to the Graduate Research Office. Please refer to the Graduate Research Office home page for further details on research degree application and scholarship application for local applicants.

International applicants should follow the application procedures specified on the RMIT International Services web site.

Consideration of applications for offer of enrolment takes place in RMIT schools and portfolios and takes account of the following:

  • Applicants need to demonstrate that they have the appropriate experience, qualifications and ability to undertake the proposed program.
  • The proposed program of study and research is at the appropriate higher degree level.
  • The proposed supervisors and consultants are suitable and will have adequate time to provide assistance to and supervision of the candidate.
  • All necessary facilities (equipment, laboratory space, library resources etc.) are available for the program at the location at which the program will be undertaken (RMIT or other approved organisation).

2. Enrolment

Once an offer of enrolment has been made, applicants should complete the enrolment process as instructed in their offer letter.

After enrolling, students will be provided with information in their Welcome and Enrolment mail pack.

Check the Graduate Research Office web page for more information.

3. Approval of Research Program

Approval of the research proposal will take place for all commencing candidates by the 31 May (Semester 1 commencements) and 31 October (Semester 2 commencements). A brief proposal indicating the direction the research will take must be completed by the candidate. Approval of the research proposal must then be given by the candidate’s senior supervisor and endorsed by the HDR Co-ordinator (or equivalent) of the school.

4. Confirmation of candidature

Confirmation of candidature for all doctoral candidates take place within 12 calendar months after the census date closest to commencement and within six months after the census date closest to commencement for all Master by research candidates.
