To apply for an RMIT TAFE program, you must follow one of four methods:
Please also refer to the following important information:
To confirm the correct application method, you should read individual RMIT program web pages or brochures. To find a program, use the search function on the Future Students home page.
Extra requirements
Some programs may require the completion of extra requirements as part of the application process. The extra requirements may include interviews, submission of a folio or preselection kit, or completion of a supplementary information form. For more information about the extra requirements for your program of interest please check the individual RMIT program web pages and/or the 2009 VTAC Guide. Supplementary Information forms are available for download from this site.
Gaining credit for previous study and experience
All TAFE applicants may apply to have previous education, work or life experiences credited to form a recognised part of their study.
Full-time TAFE programs generally require an application through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). The VTAC web site allows applications online from 4 August 2008.
VTAC administers the application process for all participating education institutions, but does not select students for individual programs, determine selection criteria or selection requirements.
You will be advised by VTAC in writing regarding the outcome of your application for a place in an RMIT program.
All letters of offer include the program name or specialisation/discipline, where appropriate, attendance mode (e.g. face-to-face classes, online, off-campus), load (full-time or part-time) and campus for which the offer is made.
Offer letters also include information about how and when to accept offers, defer or enrol. Offers are conditional on your completion of prerequisite qualifications or upon other factors detailed in the letter of offer. Failure to meet the conditions of offer will result in the withdrawal of the offer and cancellation of the enrolment (if enrolment was completed).
Future students should refer to the VTAC Guide to confirm the method of application, extra requirements, availability of programs and application costs. The VTAC Guide can be purchased at newsagents from late July, or viewed on VTAC's web site.
Applicants who are eligible for an equity admission should complete the SEAS form including supporting statements and evidence. This is an extra application form that allows for consideration of disadvantage in the selection process. It is submitted along with a VTAC application.
Current Year 12 applicants who have been disadvantaged in their final year of schooling only, and who applied for entry to tertiary study through VTAC, may be eligible for SEAS Special Year 12 Consideration.
Closing dates for VTAC applications are:
Please see the VTAC web site for further information.
Part-time TAFE programs generally require applicants to apply directly to RMIT University using the direct application form. Applications can be dropped into the Express Drop Box located at RMIT’s Info Corner or mailed directly to admissions. Details of where to mail applications are included on the form.
Direct application forms can be obtained from the web, or at Info Corner from Open Day, the second Sunday in August each year.
Applicants will be advised by RMIT in writing of the outcome of any applications. Notification of an offer will include instructions on how and when to accept offers, enrol, arrange to enrol by proxy (PDF 38KB), or defer a place.
Verbal offers of admission will not be made by RMIT University.
Applicants who are eligible for an equity admission should complete the ACESS form (available from the equity admission schemes page), including supporting statements and evidence. This is an extra application form that allows for consideration of disadvantage in the selection process. It is submitted along with a direct application. ACESS applications usually close in October.
Closing dates for TAFE direct applications are:
Please see the 2009 Direct Applications form for details of closing dates.
A limited number of TAFE programs require applicants to directly contact the school that offers that program to make an application. The method of application and school details are available on individual program pages, and in individual program brochures. To find a program, use the search function on the Future students home page.
Please note: Closing dates for school applications vary – please contact the RMIT school that offers the program.
Applicants who are eligible for an equity admission should complete the ACESS form, including supporting statements and evidence. This form allows for consideration of disadvantage in the selection process. It is submitted in addition to a school application. ACESS applications usually close in October.
RMIT reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission and cancel the enrolment of any person where such an offer was made on the basis of incomplete or inaccurate information supplied by the applicant or a certifying authority.
Certificate I—III
Certificate I, II and III and preparatory programs usually have no minimum entrance requirements.
Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma
For current Year 12 students, the minimum tertiary entrance requirement for certificate IV, diploma and advanced diploma programs is the successful completion of Year 12, e.g. Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or a comparable qualification. A small number of TAFE programs require a specific ENTER. Check individual program pages for specific entrance requirements. To find a program, use the program search function on the Future Students home page.
Please note: Some TAFE programs may require completion of a pre-selection kit, forms, test or folio as part of the application process. Specific information is available in the current VTAC Guide. Additional application forms are available for download from this site.
Non-Year 12 applicants for TAFE programs
If you are 18 years or over at 1 February 2009 (or the year you will start studying at RMIT), and/or have been out of full-time secondary study for at least 12 months, you do not need to meet minimum tertiary entrance requirements.
If you are a Non-Year 12 applicant who does not meet the minimum entry requirements, you are generally required to be employed in work that is related to the program for which you are applying. Alternatively, you may be given the opportunity to show evidence of your ability to meet the demands of the program.
International applicants for TAFE programs
A wide variety of TAFE programs are open to international applicants. For a database of specific international qualification requirements, visit the International Current Entry Requirements web page.
The Victorian government has announced major changes to TAFE education under the Securing Jobs for Your Future: Skills for Victoria reforms which take effect from 1 July 2009.
The Victorian government will guarantee that wherever there is a demand from eligible Victorians for accredited training the government will subsidise that training. This is known as the Victorian Training Guarantee.
Subject to citizenship/residency requirements, if you are in one of the following groups you will be eligible for a guaranteed government-subsidised place.
People aged up to 20 years:
Government-subsidised places will be available for training at any qualification level.
People aged 20 years and over:
Government-subsidised places will be available for all training at the foundation skills level and for any qualification higher than the qualifications already held.
TAFE fees will vary depending on the program level, previous qualifications held, when you commence a program and whether you are eligible for a TAFE fee concession.
From 1 July 2009, RMIT will offer new ‘Skill Deepening’ government subsidised places in Diploma and Advanced Diploma programs for eligible applicants. Applicants for Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas are required to complete a 2009 Victorian Training Guarantee form (PDF 118kb 4p) in addition to the Direct Application form.
Further Skills Reform changes will be phased-in from 2010. For more information refer to the Skills Reform web site.
