Sustainable systems engineering brings together the new technologies and innovative engineering approaches we need for sustainable global development. It strives to meet the needs of society within economic and ecological constraints.

Over this program you'll learn how to protect, restore and create engineered and natural systems that are socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.

Program structure and features

Learning and teaching

Classes are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, online reading, workshop, practical and laboratory sessions. These are primarily in English.

You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Program structure

In first 2 years, you'll focus on the development of a sustainable systems approach. This brings together the fundamentals of engineering sciences - mathematics, engineering design and engineering professional practice.

In later years of the program you can take specialist elective courses in transport, energy or logistics.

This program links formal learning with workplace experience and maintains a continuous thread of systems thinking and sustainable design.

You'll graduate to design, implement and operate diverse processes that have minimal cost to industry, society and the environment.

Industry connections

During the program you'll complete 12 weeks of work experience. Most students do this in Years 3 and 4.

Members of the Program Advisory Committee include senior engineers from major national companies and government and non-government organisations. The committee provides comments and advice on the contents of the program.

Climate change is a matter of national and international importance, and more emphasis is being placed on sustainability in human-developed systems. This is feeding a sharp global rise in demand for engineers who can develop sustainable systems.

Meeting the future needs and challenges of sustainability will necessitate a comprehensive design approach, with a focus on whole-of-system requirements, and an understanding of lifecycle.

You'll take a holistic approach to engineering the best-possible, compliance-driven sustainable solutions that present leading business opportunities.

Professional recognition and accreditation

We are seeking professional accreditation for this program. Once fully accredited, graduates will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia.

Prerequisites

Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4—Mathematical Methods (CAS) and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

Fees

Tuition fees vary according to program and are adjusted annually.

In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) your tuition fee is shared between you and the Commonwealth Government - if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Fee assistance

As a Commonwealth supported student, you may be able to either:

  • pay all or part of your student contribution up front and receive a 10% discount, or
  • defer your tuition fees through the HECS-HELP loan scheme.
