Entrance requirements

After choosing a program, you should note the specific academic or experience requirements associated with that program. This web page covers general information about entrance requirements for the different types of study offered by RMIT, as well as related information.

To find an RMIT program, use the program search function on the Future Students home page.

Apprenticeship and traineeship programs

If you would like to complete an apprenticeship or traineeship, you must first find relevant employment. The employer and apprentice/trainee then sign a Training Agreement which the employer forwards to a New Apprenticeship Centre. To find an employer, refer to Skills Victoria.

RMIT can also help in finding a position. Participants in RMIT's Jobs Employment and Training (JET) website receive e-mails detailing vacancies in areas of work of their choice. Over 16,000 people subscribe to this service. JET is a free service to jobseekers.

For assistance or information, telephone RMIT on 1800 651 610, or e-mail: jet@rmit.edu.au.

Refer to the Apprenticeships and Traineeships web site for further information.

Please note: you should check program web pages for specific entrance requirements for apprenticeship and traineeship programs. To find a program, use the program search function on the Future Students home page.

TAFE programs

Certificate I, II and III and preparatory programs usually have no minimum entrance requirements.

Current Year 12 students

The minimum tertiary entrance requirement for certificate IV, diploma and advanced diploma programs is the successful completion of Year 12, e.g. Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or a comparable qualification. A small number of TAFE programs require a specific ENTER. Check individual program pages for specific entrance requirements. To find a program, use the program search function on the Future Students home page.

Please note: Some TAFE programs may require completion of a pre-selection kit, supplementary information forms, a test or folio as part of the application process. Specific information is available in the current VTAC Guide or RMIT program brochures. Additional application forms are available for download from this site.

Non-Year 12 applicants

If you are applying for a TAFE program and you are 18 years or over at 1 February 2009 (or the year you will start studying at RMIT), and/or have been out of full-time secondary study for at least 12 months, you do not need to meet minimum tertiary entrance requirements.

If you don't meet the minimum entry requirements, you will generally be required to be employed in work that is related to the program for which you are applying. Alternatively, you may be given the opportunity to show evidence of your ability to meet the demands of the program.

A wide variety of TAFE programs are open to international applicants. For a database of specific international qualification requirements, visit the International Current Entry Requirements page.

Undergraduate programs

Current Year 12 applicants

The minimum tertiary entrance requirement for bachelor degree, double degree and dual award programs is the successful completion of Year 12, e.g. Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or a comparable qualification. Most programs have an ENTER requirement and/or a folio or other special requirement. Many programs also require applicants to have completed specific subjects in their Year 12 studies.

The Equivalent National Tertiary Rank (ENTER) is an overall ranking of how well Year 12 students have done across Australia (except Queensland) and refers to the level of performance that was required for entry into a program in the previous year. It is a way of standardising results nationally and helps selection officers in considering applicants for a program. The current VTAC Guide details how these rankings are formulated.

Remember that 'clearly in' ranks fluctuate from year to year, depending on the number of applicants and their ENTER scores. RMIT encourages you to apply for the program of your choice, if you have the prerequisites.

2008 ENTERs (PDF 110KB)

There are a number of alternative qualifications that RMIT recognises for entry to degrees. See the full list of general entrance requirements for degree programs for a fully detailed explanation of these alternatives.

Many degree, double degree and dual award programs have extra requirements such as interviews, tests, the presentation of folios or completion of additional forms. It is very important that you carefully read any extra requirements listed under programs in the current VTAC Guide or in RMIT program brochures. Failure to comply with these requirements by the date specified may jeopardise entry into a program.

Application forms and additional entrance requirements

Non-Year 12 applicants

If you are 21 years or over by 1 January 2009 (or the year you will start studying at RMIT), you do not need to meet minimum tertiary entrance requirements. Non-Year 12 applicants who don't meet the minimum entry requirements are generally required to be employed in work that is related to the program for which you are applying, or to have evidence and/or the ability to meet the demands of the program.

Important note: where programs specify prerequisites in mathematics and/or sciences, these requirements may still apply to Non-Year 12 applicants. If you wish to confirm the Non-Year 12 requirements for a particular program, please contact RMIT’s Info Corner, tel. 03 9925 2260, or email: study@rmit.edu.au.

Most bachelor degree programs are open to international applicants. To access a database of specific international qualification requirements, visit the International Current Entry Requirements page.

Honours programs

Honours programs generally require the completion of a first degree, usually in a related area. In addition, many require a specific level of achievement in that first degree (credit or high distinction). Some programs may also require you to supply a folio of work.

Check individual program web pages for specific information. To find a program, use the search function on the Future Students home page.

Postgraduate programs

Postgraduate study includes graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters and doctorate (PhD) programs. The usual entrance requirement for postgraduate study (either by coursework or research) is an approved tertiary qualification from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or an equivalent qualification.

Enrolment in an RMIT postgraduate program is conditional on proof of your qualifications. Certified copies of the relevant documents must be attached to applications.

Some postgraduate programs allow applicants to be appraised in other ways, such as through work experience or a substantial folio. It's important to check with the contact person for individual programs to find out about specific extra requirements.

Contact details and specific entrance requirements are available from individual program web pages. To find a program, use the program search function on the Future Students home page.
