This 1-year program allows those from design-related and other industries to develop conceptual, production and research skills in graphic design.

Rather than simply focusing on theory, this program has a strong emphasis on studio-based learning, allowing you to develop practical and industry-relevant skills from day one.

Program structure and features

Learning and teaching

In the program, you will learn both theory and practice in a studio-based environment. The studio classes provide a cohesive learning experience, enabling you to learn from your peers as well as from lecturers.

Assessment is by project and folio and you will receive feedback from industry-experienced program lecturers as well as from guest lecturers.

All programs are delivered in English.

You will have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Program structure

Classes are delivered part-time and full-time by practising professionals and take place out of business hours.

This program is made up of 96 credit points. You will be required to study 6 core courses and 2 electives.

Core courses:

  • Contextual studies
  • Information and interface
  • Type and identity
  • Professional practice project
  • Promotional design
  • Publication design.

You will choose two electives from:

  • Graphic design process
  • Illustration for graphic design
  • New media technology and process
  • Professional research and evaluation (required for entry into Master of Communication Design)
  • Web software and design.

Graduates of this program may have the opportunity to articulate into the Master of Communication Design.

Industry connections

The program has close connections to industry through visitors who run seminars, visits and tours to design studios.

Industry practitioners are actively involved in teaching as:

  • sessional lecturers
  • guest lecturers
  • tutors
  • members of the Program Advisory Committee.

You may also have the opportunity to undertake project work and work placements in studios in Australia and overseas.

Recent graduates of the program have been employed in:

  • graphic design consultancies
  • interdisciplinary consultancies
  • publishing houses
  • new media/multimedia studios
  • advertising agencies.

Due to the repurposing of digital media, designers are also being employed in corporate organisations. If you have been requested to take on design work within an existing role, this program allows you to professionalise your skills.

The most traditional roles graduates undertake are:

  • graphic designer
  • illustrator.

Many roles can also be taken up in a range of different visual mediums, such as film and TV, web and print.

Design skills taught in the program are recognised globally and students work with international software and equipment. The program has many contacts with overseas agencies and universities, providing work placement and exchange opportunities.

Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent. Applicants with significant work experience or professional practice may also be considered.
