Postgraduate

Alain de Sales, Master of Business Information Technology.
"RMIT allows me to strike the perfect balance between the theoretical and practical."

More than a qualification

For some students a postgraduate qualification offers the opportunity to build on existing knowledge and enhance career prospects. For others, it marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter in their professional and/or personal lives. Regardless of motivation, RMIT University provides a relevant and flexible framework in which postgraduate students can acquire the tools to achieve their desired goals.

RMIT postgraduate programs exist within a culture of practical learning, which emphasises the needs of the workplace and wider community. This approach enables students to learn from, and contribute to, a rigorous body of academic research and/or industry experience.

As a result, our graduates are equipped with the attributes and knowledge required to be a successful employee or employer and contribute to the economic, cultural and environmental future of the local and international community.

RMIT postgraduate students also enjoy internationally recognised supervision by academics and industry leaders, excellent facilities as well as access to a broad variety of extracurricular activities to enrich student life.

Coursework or research?

Coursework programs

RMIT University offers graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, masters and PhDs by coursework. Coursework is ideal for students seeking a structured learning experience with lectures/seminars and/or tutorial classes, usually held in the evening or on the weekend. Most programs also offer an online component while some are completely online with little or no face-to-face component.

Coursework students undertake a variety of assessment such as:

  • essays
  • individual/group presentations
  • development of strategic plans/reports
  • exams/tests
  • case studies
  • experiments.

They also enjoy the added benefits associated with being part of a class, such as:

  • opportunities for discussion and debate
  • professional networking
  • developing teamwork skills
  • friendships.

In addition, completion of formal research is often required and coursework students benefit from regular interaction with teaching and research staff during the process of developing a topic.

Students are required to complete assessment within a fixed timeframe. This ensures the structure of coursework programs is not only efficient, but inherently motivating.

Research programs

Research programs are available at both master and PhD level. Students are required to formulate their own research topic, which should broadly conform to the research interests of the portfolio in which they hope to study.

Research degrees are for students who want to pursue their own theories and ideas at a high conceptual level. Some research students are able to obtain grants from government and industry sources to support their work.

The independent investigation required for a research degree demands high standards of organisation and academic achievement. PhD and Masters students are expected to put forward their original ideas and support them with evidence. Completion of the degree involves submitting a thesis or project for critical review by a panel of experts in the field of study. Masters and PhD students must complete a minimum period of independent graduate research in which original contributions to knowledge in the discipline are made.

Research at RMIT University

RMIT offers the opportunity to undertake innovative research of world-class standard that is directed to the solution of real problems. We have a wealth of internationally recognised expertise. Our staff are working innovatively at the edge of exciting new developments in a variety of research areas in commerce, the humanities, sciences and engineering.

The university has an excellent range of facilities with every research student allocated a defined level of support in terms of laboratory or other workspace and computing facilities.

RMIT's goal is to undertake, outcome-related research and development, and to support innovation to underpin future economic and social development in the communities in which RMIT operates.

Research training programs are designed to meet the needs of students for work as well as of those in work. This is achieved in particular through:

  • development of distinctive graduate attributes and capabilities (for example, critical analysis and self-management);
  • providing educational experiences that develop people for leadership and employment (for example: working in teams).

The university has successfully developed a distinctive research profile within the Australian sector as an institution that provides a strong technological presence built on discipline-based scholarship. Our research concentrations describe our research skill set and are built through the integration of specialisations and the linking of areas of excellence across departments and faculties. The flow-on effects for the University's clients are significant and are highlighted through the development of research centres and involvement in Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) which span the technology and social research domains.

Our research programs are for students who want to pursue their own theories and ideas at a high conceptual level and by so doing develop new and innovative knowledge. Students are encouraged to work both independently and cooperatively, to interact with experts in their chosen field of research and to participate in the commercialisation processes.
