2009 Design Challenge finalists announced
Following the 2009 Design Challenge Pitch in July, the Design Research Institute is pleased to announce the results of the first stage of the 2009 Design Challenge: Fire.

Jury announced for 2009 Design Challenge
Prominent leaders and experts in their fields, including the Victorian Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Innovation, Gavin Jennings, have joined the jury for an RMIT University design challenge looking at creative solutions to extreme bushfire events.

Design challenge searches for fire solutions
An RMIT University design challenge will bring together research leaders and industry specialists to search for innovative solutions to help communities deal with extreme bushfire events.

The 2009 Design Challenge brings together researchers and specialists across a broad range of diverse sectors to generate innovative transdisciplinary design proposals in response to bushfire events.

Six teams have been shortlisted for the 2009 Design Challenge: Fire. A summary of shortlisted projects is now viewable. Finalists are currently developing their ideas for presentation/exhibition in November, with one team selected to receive the RMIT Design Research Institute Challenge Award and funding for the next stage of research and development in 2010.

The Design Research Institute sees this as a major opportunity to spark new working relationships between research, industry and community.

2009 Design Challenge: Fire Floor Talks

The 2009 Design Challenge is supported by Standards Australia and the Australian International Design Awards; the State of Design Festival and the Victorian Government.

The STATE of DESIGN Festival showcased Victoria’s leading designers, creative teams and innovative businesses via four major programs focused around the 2009 theme “Sampling the Future”. The 2009 program was comprised of Design Capital - the business seminar series, Design For Everyone public and cultural events, Design:Made:Trade - an industry fair and the biennial Premier’s Design Awards (next held in 2010). Encouraging everyone to explore and learn, State of Design Festival demonstrated why Victoria is Australia's centre for design excellence and Melbourne, its design capital.
