Peter Barrett is a tutor in architectural history. He is currently tutoring in Australian Architecture in the School of Architecture& Design, and has previously worked as the program manager of the Accelerated Program in the School of Design & Social Context and tutored in architectural history and other subjects in the school. He works in his field as a heritage consultant and architectural historian owning and managing the firm Peter Andrew Barrett Architectural Conservation Consultants. Peter has worked on a variety of academic and professional heritage projects in Australia and the United States of America.

Research and scholarship

Research interests include architectural links between Australia and the United States, focusing on the Pacific rim. Other architectural historical links between Pacific rim nations and Australia and the United States. Masters thesis Building through the Golden Gate was a written work on this research.

Other research interests include architecture of the United States, particularly commercial architecture of the late nineteenth century and twentieth century, traditional Japanese and Pre/Post Columbian Central American architecture.

Recent published articles and events include:

  • Coast to Coast (to be published in 2009) chapter relating to the exchange of architectural knowledge across the Pacific in the nineteenth and early twentieth century (in association with Prue Ahrens of the University of Queensland).
  • The Impermanent City exhibition (2008) at the City Musuem, Melbourne.
  • Her Majesty’s Collingwood Stockade article in Provenance the journal of the Public Records Office Victoria (2007).
  • ReBuilt Environment. Imitating Melbourne Architecture exhibition (2006) at the City Museum Melbourne.
