Key Activities
Peter Cripps is an artist and educator. In his early career he worked in Australian museums, galleries and the related art industry as a curator and director for fifteen years. He has curated and co-curated 55 exhibitions at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria and university and regional galleries in Australia. During this period he assisted and worked closely with Sol Lewitt and carried out a number of his projects in the Australian Art Museum.

Research
Peter is currently completing a doctoral thesis: “Cultural Production: Reassertion of a critical spatial perspective.” His research involves the development of a body of work focused on the construction of cultural objects in the context of museum culture. In particular, it elucidates connections between the social production of space, the development of cultural identity and display practices developed at the Altes Museum, Berlin (1823*).
Peter leads a research group composed of Sculpture staff and research students investigating both conceptual and technical areas in spatial practice. Our research is informed by sculpture, installation, performance, time based art and associated parallel areas of art practice. Of particular interest is the analytical tradition in figuration and space, developmental working processes and the sequencing of object production, construction and modes of presentation and the historical and contemporary applications to technical areas such as foundry and fabrication. Research into spatial teaching is an ongoing area of investigation with a focus on the conceptualisation of space by artists with regard to the physical, psychological and perceptual production of space.

In 2010 Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne held a major Research exhibition entitled, Peter Cripps: Towards an Elegant Solution, as part of ACCA’s Influential Australian Artist Series. This exhibition brought together many of Cripps’ significant early sculptures and installations. The installation changed twice during the exhibition period to enable a comprehensive and episodic understanding of Cripps’ practice. Works was drawn from public and private collections. ACCA has prepared a substantial catalogue raisonne for this exhibition. The exhibition was curated by Associate Curator Rebecca Coates. Peter Cripps has had thirty-two individual exhibitions from 1976 – 2010 at private and public galleries, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, and Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne. In addition, he has participated in fifty-three group exhibitions from 1973 – 2010. In 2010 Cripps’ work has been included in two significant group exhibitions: Mirror Mirror: Then and Now, curated by Dr Ann Stephen and shown in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide; and Melbourne><Brisbane: punk art and after, curated by David Pestorius at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne. His work is included comprehensively in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australian National Gallery, Canberra and most State Galleries in Australia, as well as numerous corporate and private collections internationally. |

Peter has written in depth on the roles carried out by artists in the Australian community as critics, art writers, curators, and past directors of many Australian art museums. Awards and Residencies |

In 1998, in collaboration with a RMIT research student, Peter won a major commission for the Olympic Games precinct at Homebush Bay, NSW. In 2010 Peter was commissioned by Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, Melbourne to install two, 7 meter high Public Projects sculpture on ACCA forcourt, these work are now in the Monash University Public Art collection. Peter has been awarded eleven project and residency grants from the Visual Arts/Craft Board of Australia Council and Arts Victoria from 1977 to 2010. |
