Nicholas Ryan was offered work in a construction company within months of completing a Diploma of Building and Construction.
Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)
Our studies focused on making us employable and productive members in any construction team.
I studied the Diploma of Building and Construction because I knew it was well regarded in the industry. Many directors of large construction companies in Melbourne have this qualification.
Our studies focused on making us employable and productive members in any construction team. One of the highlights for me was building a bungalow in a hands-on class assignment.
This course recreated the work environment and the expectations of the industry. Our teachers and lecturers were experienced in the field and brought real-world knowledge into the classroom.
It’s a modern campus, which I appreciated as I relied on having access to computer labs and the latest software to do my work.
I loved studying in the centre of Melbourne.
I’d encourage future students to take advantage of as many opportunities as you can. You might be surprised how much you enjoy.
I represented my peers on the student staff consultative committee and was voted to chair the board in my final year.
I was also team manager for the men’s hockey team during University Games.
Some of my success in this role as team manager comes from the leadership and people management skills I’ve learned at RMIT.
I hope to gain more experience in the construction industry, by working and studying the Bachelor of Project Management. I’m interested to see if there are roles that might take me overseas too.
One day I’d love to hold a senior role in a leading construction company, working on a large stadium or building that will be celebrated in Melbourne as much as the MCG or Eureka Tower.
