Samantha’s interest in buildings, construction and cities motivated her to study construction management.
Buildings and construction have the ability to shape and influence cities. This is something that I have always been fascinated by. I’ve often wondered what it takes to build these buildings, and this is my main motivator.
I’ve always been fascinated by buildings and construction – this is what motivated me to study the Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management) (Honours). I was quite nervous when first applying for the degree because I was entering as a mature aged student.
Prior to starting my studies, I remember being really nervous. It had been almost 10 years since I graduated from high school and I felt like the oldest in my class. I was also juggling full-time work with my studies, but blossoming friendships and a willingness to achieve high standards drives determination.
"A highlight of the degree was a study tour that I went on where my group visited a range of international construction developments. We visited Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London and Singapore and learnt about the technologies and processes used in construction in other countries. The site visits were marvellous and the variations in projects were amazing. All the professionals working within the construction industry whom we met were great, really knowledgeable and came from diverse backgrounds.
For anyone considering this degree, it will prepare you for the challenges of the construction industry – from planning, coordination and design, through to the completion of a project. This degree gives you the tools to shape and develop the future built environment.
In the future I hope to be working in the commercial industry on high-level construction projects. I would like to work across various sectors for construction in areas to build health and clinical, industrial, educational and hospitality buildings. I’d love to end up at a company that has a diverse skill set working within different sections and impacting on different communities.
The construction industry is so diverse and exciting. Anyone interested in undertaking construction management should just give it a go! Especially women – the industry is calling for more women to get involved.
