Erin's love of maps inspired her dream to work in an industry where she could work with maps on a daily basis.
Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science) - Formerly Bachelor of Applied Science (Geomatics)
The opportunities presented by geospatial science are endless and you can never truly know where this degree can take you. That’s what I find so exciting about it.
“I love maps and wanted to work in an industry where I could immerse myself in maps on a daily basis. I chose RMIT Geomatics program because of its very practical approach. Also, when I went to Open Day, the teaching staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the students I spoke to could not have held the program in a higher regard.
The highlight of my studies has been my major project in final year. I was able to complete a project that will assist a company I work with to decide where they should be located. The project really helped me to realise the real world importance and value of spatial data.
A requirement of this program is to complete a minimum amount of work experience before you graduate. I was lucky enough to gain my work experience with a company that works with LiDAR and aerial imagery. I didn’t expect to gain work in this field and it has been exciting and interesting to be able to develop my skills in this area.
I still work in the position that I gained for work experience and have been guaranteed full-time work once I graduate.
I’ve been fortunate to receive three awards during my studies. I received the 2011 Robert J Gray Prize, the 2012 SIBA Award and the 2012 Esri Award. The awards are an excellent way of giving recognition for the hard work that the students put in.
