Information Technology (IT) touches all areas of life. IT professionals have the ability to transform industry landscapes and have a positive impact on businesses.
Dr Naomi Augar, Program Director of the School of Business IT and Logistics, looks at where the IT industry is heading and discusses the benefits of studying the Master of Business Information Technology.
What is the benefit of combining the two disciplines of business and information technology?
IT enables businesses to achieve their strategic objectives. Having skills and knowledge in both business and IT are critical to ensure that our graduates can understand and document business requirements, design and develop solutions that deliver value and support businesses to achieve their goals.
Who is suited to this program and what can students expect from studying the Master of Business Information Technology?
The program is suited to students from a business background looking to move into an IT role. It is also suited to those with IT work experience who are looking for a credential that will support a move into IT management roles.
Students will develop skills in problem solving, business requirements analysis, solution development, business communication and reporting. A variety of learning and teaching formats are used in the program and classes take place in the state-of-the-art Swanston Academic Building.
Where are jobs available? What types of positions are students or graduates pursuing?
Many graduates move into high demand roles as Business Analysts and IT Managers. The Australian Government Department of Employment predicts a 19.1 per cent increase in jobs for ICT Business and Systems Analysts in the five years to 2019. They also predict a strong growth in demand for IT Managers over the same period. The Live in Victoria State Nomination Occupation List (2015) also shows that ICT occupations continue to feature prominently on occupation lists for skilled nominated migration programs.
What is the study/student experience like? What and how will students learn?
The program provides diverse learning experiences that allow our graduates to readily enter industry and excel in the Information Age. Our students are engaged with real world case studies focusing on providing recommendations based on industry best practice. Team work and problemsolving are emphasised in our intensive mode capstone project course where students deliver projects for clients. Students also develop skills through hands-on experience with emerging technologies in our Business IT lab.
As an expert in this area, what inspires you and where do you see the industry going in the next five years?
IT is transforming life and business; from the influence of emerging technologies like 3D printers on supply chains to the ability of applications to connect people. Whether it is supporting financial transactions, protecting critical data, or developing systems that support medical staff to save lives, the role and potential of IT and IT professionals cannot be underestimated.
The fast changing landscape is increasingly supporting convenience and enhanced decision making. business analytics, applications and start-ups are all areas that will capitalise on the value of data for businesses and consumers alike in the coming years.
