You’ll study in state-of-the-art facilities at RMIT’s City campus with lecturers connected with major industry bodies such as the Furniture Industry Association of Australia and Design Institute of Australia.
In this program you’ll work on ’real-world’ briefs and have the opportunity to work with Australian and international design companies. One recent brief involved working with The Salvation Army to create a range of economical and ergonomic furniture for some of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged.
You’ll participate in industry-wide competitions like Australia's longest running design competition, VIVID (Vibrant Visions in Design).
Furniture students dominated at The Edge international furniture competition and had a strong presence at the London Design Festival.
Many current students and graduates have also been celebrated at the Melbourne Now exhibition which celebrates creative practitioners in Melbourne.
This program is made up of 4 core streams called the Design Studios, that constitute your key learning activity. These streams are:
- Design studies
- Design studio
The objective of the 4 streams is to allow you to interact with industry, student and staff through group work and peer-to-peer learning.
Full-time students are expected to attend 23 hours of classes over 4 days and undertake approximately 15 hours of extra study and research weekly. There are often concentrated period of out-of-class self-directed work around the time assessments are due.
