This program allows you to specialise in one of the following areas:
- dental practice administration
- dental radiography
- general anaesthesia
- oral health promotion.
You’ll developed advanced chair-side assistance to dental professionals.
To ensure you receive up to date training, you’ll have access to the world-class Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital in Carlton. Fully operational dental simulation units give students a hands-on dental surgery experience in a simulated environment. There are also dental radiography/clinical simulation laboratories, student computer classrooms and lecture theatre on site.

Dental practice administration: 9 months part-time
Dental radiography: 12 months part-time
Oral health promotion: and 18 months part-time
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.
You'll have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.
Your success in the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting will lead you toward becoming an integral part of dental health teams in private and public sector dental clinics and agencies.
Depending on your stream, you'll be able to:
- work in administration
- perform dental radiography procedures, interpret a request from a dental operator for a radiographic image, and produce the image in those states where dental assistants are allowed to undertake these tasks
- provide advanced care to patients under general anaesthesia
- provide advice in oral hygiene techniques, dietary analysis and counselling, community oral health promotion programs.
Professional recognition and accreditation
All streams are supported and recognised by industry and recognised nationally.
Graduates of the dental radiography stream will be eligible to be licensed in intra-oral dental radiography from the Victorian Government Department of Health.
