Jacinta is a third-year industrial design student, and the first recipient of the Milan Travelling Scholarship.
Having the ability to really experience the world is something that has no limit on its value."
Jacinta completed a 6-month exchange at Politecnico di Milano in 2014. She wrote to us from Milan about what the the scholarship has meant for her and her studies.
"Until last year, I had never flown in a plane, let alone to another country, or done any travelling beyond school camps - even with my family. Vacations were never a priority in our family because the immediate necessities were more important.
I knew that the only way I could ever really travel would be via scholarship so when I got an email about a travelling scholarship to Milan I thought there would be nothing lost in applying. I guess this proves that there is always hope in what seems like a pipe dream!
There’s no real equal to being able to study design in Milan. My aim has been to improve my skills, network, and just take everything in. A lot of my previous work has been influenced by my Italian heritage, and more often than not, subtly visually represents what I have absorbed as cultural philosophy. There is a lot of inspiration to be found here, I think it's just a matter of channelling it into my work.
My Italian heritage also made the application about a personal journey towards something I had never thought attainable. The scholarship doesn’t cover everything I need, but without it I can guarantee that doing what I am right now would have taken many more years. Even though I am here for studies - there is still so much that would have not been possible without the assistance so I am ever-grateful for that.
Having the ability to really experience the world is something that has no limit on its value. I know for a fact that as a person, there is no way that I can avoid growth within this experience, and so also for that, I am thankful.“
