Giving to education is powerful. A bequest is a lasting legacy that will shape the future of RMIT - benefiting students, the University and the community for years to come.
How do I leave a gift in my will?
A bequest is a gift in your will. Leaving a bequest to RMIT is simple and will help shape our future, benefiting students, the University and the community for years to come.
After considering the needs of your family and loved ones, we would be honoured if you were to consider leaving a bequest to RMIT. You will become part of the future of the University and leave a lasting legacy that will impact generations to come.
Preparing your will
You can include a bequest to RMIT when your write your will. If you already have a will, you can add a codicil (legal provision) to include the bequest. For assistance on will writing and amendment, we recommend that you consult a solicitor, a trustee, or an accredited wills and estate specialist.
Suggested wording for your will
You may wish to specify how your gift is used by RMIT or leave a bequest for general purposes, enabling the University to fund future needs in an ever-changing, global environment.
Making a bequest to RMIT is as simple as including wording such as the following in your will:
“I give [my estate] or [portion/the residue of my estate] or [the sum of $_______] to Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and I express the wish without creating a binding trust that the funds be used and applied for the purposes of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in such a manner as Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology may determine.”
Specific purpose bequest:
“I give [my estate] or [portion/the residue of my estate] or [the sum of $_______] to Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and I express the wish without creating a binding trust that my gift be applied for the general purpose of (insert your vision here) or if the purpose no longer exists then for a similar purpose at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.”
If you are considering making a bequest, we encourage you to have a confidential conversation with us about how you may be able to support RMIT. We will work closely with you to ensure we understand your intentions and will be able to honour your wishes.
If you have planned a gift to RMIT, we encourage you to let us know. This will give us an opportunity to recognise your intentions during your lifetime, invite you to events and keep you informed about your areas of interest.
