RMIT English Worldwide

All applications must be submitted with an English proficiency test result, unless the student has studied at an institution where English is the medium of instruction.

When English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) programs are required for entry into a program, the number of weeks of ELICOS study is determined by RMIT (based on IELTS, TOEFL score) and/or RMIT English Worldwide (REW) based on a placement test.

See entry requirements for full details.

If the student does not have proof of English proficiency, they must undertake the RMIT English Worldwide (REW) online English placement test.  The test ensures that the student is offered the correct duration of English study.

RMIT English Worldwide (REW) will provide test details when a student books a placement test.

  • The test takes approximately 60 minutes.
  • It is an online English placement test that students can take from home at any time.
  • The test requires a computer and webcam.

All online REW English placement test bookings (onshore and offshore students) can be submitted directly to RMIT English Worldwide through the online REW English placement test booking form.

Once a test booking has been made, the candidate will receive important information about the test, and instructions on how to log in via the candidate’s personal email address, so they can access the test and receive their results.

The following will be required to secure a booking:

  • Completed REW online English placement test booking form
  • Copy of candidate’s passport
  • Expected test date
  • Candidate’s personal email address for further communication
  • Confirmation of required setup: reliable internet connection, suitable browser (Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox), Zoom Client for Meetings, headset, microphone and web camera

The test results are only valid for English for Academic Purposes, it cannot be used to gain direct entry into an RMIT formal program.

Prior to sitting an online English placement test, students are required to attend a pre-test welcome session. Sessions are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. NOTE: The test times are local Melbourne (AEDT) time. If the student is currently located offshore, please check the time difference here to ensure that the student is able to start the test on time.

  • Tuesdays 12:00pm-12:20pm
  • Thursdays 3:30pm-3:50pm

The test takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. Students should complete the test straightaway after the welcome session.

Test candidates are permitted to re-sit the REW Placement test after a minimum of 4 weeks (maximum of 3 times per 12 months). Please note that a re-sit could affect the recommended starting level and number of EAP weeks required.
