After its success at the Globelight Festival, McFarlane & Verhagen’s audiovisual plinth returned as part of Experimenta: Recharge.
Object 2 continues the series’ objective of using sound and light to turn useless spatial objects into interesting temporal ones. Whilst Object 2 took Miike’s MPD Psycho as its starting point, Object 2 is inspired by the sensory immersion of Cosmato’s cult film Beyond the Black Rainbow.
In collaboration with Toby Brodel, the system controlling the lights now facilitates a capacity for sound to control image, a higher temporal resolution, and a broader colour spectrum. The end result, driven by sound design, evokes a territory rich, seductive and disturbing.
If Object 1 encouraged the audient to consider what they may be to be seeing and hearing what they are, Object 2 is all about stimulating locative schemas to disambiguate questions of where.
