The School of Engineering at RMIT is dedicated to supporting higher degrees by research (HDR) students through a variety of generous support schemes.
Candidates have access to world-class research facilities such as the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct and the Micro Nano Research Facility. Well-equipped laboratories support research in aerospace, automotive, biomedical, civil, chemical, environmental, mechanical, mechatronics, materials, manufacturing, electrical, electronic and telecommunications engineering.
At enrolment, each candidate is provided with a laptop for their sole use. There is then the opportunity to access a range of bookable work spaces and lockers across School locations at the City and Bundoora campuses.
In their third year and fourth years, candidates are eligible for a desk for their individual use.
Top up scholarships and additional funding
The School provides top-up scholarships of $5000 per annum to all centrally-awarded scholarship recipients.
Each candidate also receives $1000 per year (accruable for three years) for travel and research consumables, however travel is not allowable in the first year.
The School offers generous publication incentives of up to $1000 per first authored publication in a Q1 journal. Of this, 50% of the funds are paid as a cash grant, while the remainder accrues to their travel account.
Ten HDR publication grants are also awarded each year for post-submission candidates. These competitive grants provide candidates with a stipend for three months at the Research Training Place (RTP) stipend scholarship rate.
The School also offers the following annual prizes:
- Best PhD thesis – Awarded to the best PhD thesis based on examiners reports and the number of Scopus-indexed publications
- Best Masters thesis – Awarded to the best Masters thesis based on examiners reports
- Publication prize – Awarded to a HDR student based on the quantity and quality of publications and the number of Scopus-indexed publications
- Impact prize – Awarded to a HDR student whose research has achieved considerable impact outside the academic community (based on industry engagements, commercialisation, patents, media coverage, external awards)
