Essential information you need before you apply for a Masters by Research or the Doctor of Philosophy program with the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies.
To be considered for a place in a Higher Degree by Research at RMIT University, you will need to meet the eligibility requirements for the program for which you are applying.
Eligibility does not ensure an offer, as RMIT receives more applications than available places.
Check your eligibility on the program pages:
- Doctor of Philosophy – PhD (Global, Urban & Social Studies)
- Master by Research – Master of Social Science (Global, Urban & Social Studies)
The School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS) may offer all available places during assessment of the scholarship round. You are advised to submit your formal application to RMIT during the scholarship round even if not applying for a scholarship.
How to apply
A selection team in GUSS undertakes a pre-application assessment for prospective candidates and advises supervisor availability before the formal application to RMIT is submitted.
Provide the required documentation listed on the Pre-Application Form to enable the School to determine eligibility and supervisor availability.
Please allow time to carefully consider your eligibility, proposal and supervisors before we reply to you by email advising supervisor availability and if a formal application to RMIT is recommended.
In the two weeks prior to the scholarship application deadline, the School may be unable to assist with supervisor availability due to the high volume of queries received. You are advised to make your request well before mid-October, 2016.
If your first contact with the School is in the two weeks prior to the closing date for scholarship applications, you are advised to skip Step 1 and follow Step 2.
Local/domestic students need to formally apply for a Higher Degree by Research place via the School of Graduate Research.
Please ensure all requested documents are sent together in one email as separate attachments in PDF or DOC format, labelled with your name and document type.
If you previously submitted only some of the requested information, resend with the rest of the documents required.
Documents received too close to the official scholarship deadline may not be able to be assessed by the School in time to assist with your formal application to RMIT.
You must be able to arrive at the university to enrol before the beginning of the semester in which you wish to commence, as you will need to start the compulsory Research Strategies course in your first semester.
Semester 1, 2017 begins in the last week of February 2017.
For international students, there is a lengthy application process. Please indicate clearly on your email which semester and year you plan to apply for, allowing for visa approval delays.
