Follow this process for applying and enrolling into a postgraduate research program in the School of Media and Communication.
Prior to your application
Contact potential supervisors for your program before you submit a formal application. Your email should include:
- A brief CV so that we have some idea of your academic background as well as any relevant professional experience. We are particularly interested in any past research experience (e.g. an honours thesis, a publication, exhibition or work-related research).
- Information about the proposed topic you are interested in undertaking. Preference is given to postgraduate applicants whose topics are aligned with the School’s priority research areas. The information you supply about your topic will also help us determine whether we have appropriate and available supervisors for you.

Submission of the formal application document
There are different application methods depending on whether you are considered a local applicant or an international applicant:
Enrolment for local students occurs once a year, usually at the beginning of the academic year. The deadline for local applications is the end of October, at which time all eligible applicants are ranked to determine the allocation of funded places and scholarships. Applications may continue to be accepted until March in the year of commencement, however the School will more than likely NOT be able to offer a funded place to prospective students at that time.
The process for enrolling into a research program in the School of Media and Communication for International Students is the same as for domestic students, except for the timeline and the fact that applications must be submitted via RMIT International. There is no deadline for international applications.
Consideration of formal application and offers of places
Once the School has received the application (via the School of Graduate Research or RMIT International), you will be considered for a place – and you may also be asked to participate in an interview as part of this process. Note offers made to international applicants will be sent via RMIT International.
Offers subsequently made will clearly spell out any associated terms and conditions. Please read thoroughly before deciding whether to accept a place. You will need to respond to the School Administrative Research Officer no more than two weeks after receiving the letter of offer to confirm your place in the program. If you do not respond within this time, your place may be re-allocated.
Successful applicants who accept a place will then have to formally enrol. Advice concerning how to do this will be sent to you following your acceptance of a place. Once enrolled, you will be asked to attend an induction session which will familiarise you with the processes and procedures used in the School. At this session, you will also have a chance to meet the School Research staff, along with other staff members involved in research programs in the School, and other students who are commencing postgraduate research study at the same time as you.
As part of undertaking a research degree at RMIT University, it is compulsory to complete an appropriate Research Strategies/Methods course. Unless you qualify for an exemption (if for example you have already completed an equivalent level research methods-type course), students are expected to enrol and undertake this course in their first semester of study.
