RMIT University student and Reservoir resident Saskia Moore has been awarded a prestigious Siemens-RMIT Fine Art Awards Scholarship.
The Master of Fine Art student won a $7,000 Postgraduate Scholarship for her artwork, entitled The Fold.
“I love the look of an individual ripped envelope. It has an organic nature about it, and when stacked vertically next to each other it becomes a floating landscape,” Ms Moore said.
“I asked a community group to collect every standard DL size envelope they received over a six-month period. This became the sculpture of 20,000 collected envelopes – a collected fragment when repeated relentlessly, folds time and memory.
“I see it as the end of analogue as well – it is actually becoming hard to collect envelopes as people send information digitally.”
Ms Moore, who has worked as an arts producer for the past decade, in theatre and live arts productions, said she enjoyed working with people to get multiples of objects for her sculptures.
A previous collection involved working with an aged care facility to collect 8,000 slides from dementia patients, which resulted in Audrey Jeane’sTravelling Slideshow, a highly successful performance installation artwork for the Melbourne International Arts Festival in 2009 at the Forum Theatre. It will be performed again at the Perth Festival in February.
Ms Moore plans to use the scholarship to hire a studio space for a year or possibly go overseas to explore events at other international arts festivals.
Now in their ninth year, the Siemens-RMIT Fine Art Scholarship Awards help RMIT Fine Art students further their careers by assisting their research and production costs.
The awards attracted more than 200 entries in 2010, with 43 shortlisted artists exhibiting their work at RMIT Gallery. The exhibition ends on 23 January.
Chairman and Managing Director of Siemens Australia and New Zealand, Albert Goller, said: “Education, technology and above all, innovations are the lifeblood at Siemens and we foster a creative environment where ideas can develop and grow. We are proud to support the development of talent each year demonstrating innovative thinking through arts and creativity.”
