James Paul is a composer and sensory artist with a fetish for audio and an obsession with time.
His research explores the language and nuances of equilibrioception through interactions with the vestibular system (inner ear), the auditory system (cochlea and outer ear) and proprioception (sense of space). Preliminary experiments using sound, vision and motion to create choreographed disruption to the body's sense of stasis, balance and space have uncovered fertile ground in a new language of metaphor; a language of physical sensations on the fringes of perception that can plunge one from soaring elation to deep dread, and back again. The burning question, and focus of his research, is "why?"
James has created pieces for screen, stage and installation, and has an established musical practice, both live and in studio. He has created works with artists including Speak Percussion, Cat Hope, Daniel Schlusser and Darrin Verhagen. He also produces hiphop records.
