Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921, and is one of China’s top research Universities and a member of the 211 Project and 985 Innovative Platforms for Key Disciplines Project - initiatives of the Chinese government as part of a national endeavor to build world-class universities in the 21st century.

Xiamen University has a graduate school, 25 schools and 10 research institutes and research centres. With 26 doctoral degrees in first–class disciplines, and 40 master degrees in first-class disciplines, the university offers a total of 536 undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs.

The university has a total enrolment of over 38000 full-time students on campus, including 20575 undergraduates, 15590 master students, 2567 doctoral students, and over 2500 international students.

Xiamen University has inter-university cooperative ties with over 170 institutions of higher education at home and abroad. Xiamen University formally established multi-lateral cooperative relationship with seven other universities around the world by signing the Agreement on Global U7 Consortium in 2004.
