As a practicing artist, Peter Ellis is an acute observer of natural world, his work highlights, current social, political and environmental concerns while also drawing upon a vast array of historic and cultural art references.
His interest in Dada and Surrealism has been at the core of his artistic research for more than forty years. His diverse practice includes paintings, drawings, prints, objects, multiples, artists' books, zines and collaborative sound works.
In particular, Peter's practice explores the Surrealist conception of 'the marvelous' highlighting the power of the imagination and the unconscious mind through techniques such as dream analysis and psychic automatism. Depicting an imaginative world of idiosyncratic personal symbolism, his imagery conjures incongruous spaces inhabited by strange animals, hybrid creatures and metamorphosing figures.
He has presented more than 20 solo exhibitions and his work has been selected for more than 170 curated exhibitions nationally and internationally.
He has been the recipient of a number of prestigious Grants and Awards. His work is represented in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Western Australian Art Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art.
