STAFF PROFILE
Dr Geoff Hogg
Dr Geoff Hogg is Director of the Centre for Art, Society and Transformation (CAST) within the School of Art. The Centre focuses on questions of art and social engagement.
Trained as a painter, Geoff Hogg was an early contributor to the revival of contemporary Public Art. He began his work with a strong interest in public forms, including street installation, projection, integrated architecture and craft, along with banner making, processional objects and, in particular, large-scale wall painting and drawing. This work grew from a concern to re-connect with undervalued sources and traditions in contemporary cultural life.
“Geoff Hogg is one of the key Australian artists who has sought to change the way art and culture are received and understood through both his own art making and in an advisory capacity to Federal, State and local Governments.” ~Katrina Fraser, Big Picture, 1994.
Pursuing an interest in crosscultural practice, he developed what are said to be the first joint Public Art projects between Chinese and overseas artists in China. In recent years he has worked extensively in Turkey, creating projects that draw on grassroots support at a local level in Australia to create links and develop imaginative connections for cultural dialogue and exchange.
He has continued this interest, engaging with artists and communities in Mexico and Cuba developing projects that focus on collaboration and shared experience. His practice is built around creative networks and innovative links beyond traditional artistic communities, extending notions of creativity into the experience of everyday life.
Geoff Hogg’s areas of expertise focus on Art in Public Space and Socially Engaged Art Practice, particularly intercultural practice.
Dr Geoff Hogg is the Director of the Centre for Art, Society and Transformation (CAST), the School of Art Research Centre and teaches within the Art in Public Space program. He also provides masters by research and PhD supervision. His teaching has focused on the development of international collaborations, conducting regular field trips, engaging with partners in China, Italy and Turkey.
