Celebrating our graduates – Claudia Forsberg

Claudia Forsberg has had a unique three years at university during the pandemic but has made the most of every opportunity that has been thrown her way.

“I feel this to be one of my proudest achievements in my life so far,” said Claudia reflecting on her experience at RMIT.

Throughout her degree, Claudia was very involved in the WIL (work integrated learning) program that is part of the RMIT curriculum in several courses.

This gives students the opportunity to work in the industry and assists in developing knowledge and skills. Claudia completed a number of these programs including spending time with The ABC, Canberra Times and The Age.

“When it comes to internships, preparation is everything. Knowing who you’re going to work for and what you need to have ready before your first day will set you up for a good first impression as well as an easier ride.”

Life at uni

Starting university for Claudia was challenging as there were many obstacles including not knowing anyone in her course, and navigating her way around the campus in a wheelchair.

“But very quickly I found my way and made lifelong friends.  I met some incredible teachers and mentors who taught me so much during this degree and ultimately encouraged me to be the journalist I am today."

Although Claudia studied the majority of her course online, she still developed friendships with other students that made studying online fun!

“One of the staples of 2020/21 was definitely the zoom meetings. The journalism trivia nights were some of the best times we’ve had. Having a drink with fellow classmates and faculty members and laughing at some ridiculous cohort joke that we’ve picked up during the semester.”

“I truly believe it’s the people we’re surrounded by that make us who we are, and I’m surround by some pretty great people.”

Life after graduating

Claudia is eager to join the workforce full time to save up to move out of her family home, become more independent and enjoy her youth.

“It ain’t cheap out here!” said Claudia.

Claudia loves journalism more than ever and cannot wait to start working in the field. She wants to leave her mark and believes journalism is a place where she can make a difference.

“In saying that, I never want to stop learning. Even if this is my last year of official studies, I will continue to self-improve and gain as much knowledge about the world as I can.”

Advice for future students

“Just go for it! There’s a reason why RMIT journalism has such a great reputation. You will get to learn from some of the best in the business as well as get hands on experience with industry partners.”
