Friends will be made and doors will be opened

The pursuit of passion has been an underlying force in my career progression from as long as I can remember.

RMIT was a clear choice for me

“I chose to study the Master of Translating and Interpreting at RMIT, as it was the only university in the world at the time that provided a program in my niche interest; Master of Translating and Interpreting with an Indonesian-English pair. There were simply no other institutions offering this degree, so moving to Melbourne from my hometown of Depok, Indonesia was a natural step for me to advance my career.”

“I knew the program from its old ties with my former campus Universitas Indonesia. Andika Wijaya, a former lecturer of mine who was also studying at RMIT at the same time, became my best friend in Melbourne. It’s a wonderful city, multicultural and fun to live in.”

I knew the experience would help me reach my goals

“I’ve been a debater, radio announcer, event planner, makeup artist, translator, simultaneous interpreter and lecturer. A combination of the last three ones were the reason I decided to come to Melbourne. I knew the whole experience would help me build self-esteem and become the successful professional that I envision.”

“I think RMIT is unique in the way it gives students an academic edge plus industry-based experience. That’s indispensable these days, given the job market has such high demands on graduates.”

Making new friends was quite easy

“My studies were supported by a scholarship grant from the Indonesian Ministry of Finance called LPDP. The objective of this grant is to provide the public an opportunity for postgraduate study abroad and return to help develop Indonesia. Melbourne actually has the highest number of LPDP awardees, so having 100 plus friends automatically on arrival to Melbourne made it easier for me to adjust.”

I’d always head straight to my favourite coffee stand

“A perfect day in Melbourne for me starts off with my train commute on the Sandringham line -  packed with good looking men rushing towards the city as a morning boost! I’d always head straight to my favourite coffee stand, Coffee Nomad, for my soy mocha fix.”

“When lunch came, my mates from the lab and I would search the CBD for cheap eats. Some of my favourites were Chinese stir fry at Jin Dumpling & Noodle House, all-you-can-eat vegetarian curry at Crossways, baguettes at Flinders Lane and Indonesian cuisine at Salero Kito.”

I have been developing a translation firm

“Since graduating, I have been developing a translation firm that accommodates the translations needs of businesses for their products to successfully penetrate the Indonesian market. I have also been bridging the communication gap between Indonesia and foreign institutions by providing Indonesian interpreting services.”

I'm excited to see what the future brings

“I see myself owning multiple businesses in the translation and interpreting sector, and branching out to providing services that assist international students. Having been an international student myself, I have been envisioning ways to help international students be more at ease at their host institution and excel in their study. I am also looking forward to coming back to RMIT for a PhD sometime in the future.”

Everyone is as confused as you are

“My one piece of advice to new students would be: “Everyone is as confused as you are”. The simplest first step is to share that confusion with others. Somehow, down the line, troubles will be resolved, friends will be made and doors will be opened.”
