English for Academic Purposes

The English for Academic Purposes program (Program CRICOS Code 076733A), delivered by RMIT English Worldwide (CRICOS Provider No. 01912G), consists of six levels from Elementary to Advanced Plus. Each level uses both classroom based learning and online learning.

One of the unique features of our courses is that we teach using a task-centred approach, which provides you with opportunities to practise what you learn in the real world. Our courses:

  • promote the development of your language and academic skills
  • teach the skills you need to successfully study at university
  • contain materials relevant to academic coursework and professional goals
  • create opportunities to enrich your international experience.

To get the most out of your experience, you need to actively participate in class and we encourage you to develop and express your own ideas and opinions.

Entry requirements

We will place you in a class that matches your most recent IELTS or other recognised English language proficiency test results, which can be no more than 24 months old. See the Pathways table below to see the test results required for different levels.

We may also test you when you arrive to confirm your level of English. If we assess you at a different level than the one provided in your application, you may need to study more or fewer weeks than originally offered. This may affect when you can start the next program you had planned to study.

If you do not have an IELTS score (or English test equivalent) you can sit a placement test at RMIT English Worldwide. Contact your RMIT agent or RMIT Training to arrange a placement test.

Pathway to further study

If you successfully complete an Upper Intermediate, Advanced or Advanced Plus language course, you can go straight into many RMIT programs without having to complete a further English language test.
