Overview

Gender inequality is a recognised social issue in Australia and identified as a key driver of gendered violence.

To address this, governments have developed and implemented national, state, territory and local strategies that require cultural, social and organisational change. 

The Course in Gender Equity consists of three modules that will enable you to apply, promote and support gender equity in the workplace. The overarching themes are developing and applying a gender lens, promoting gender equity within a work context, and undertaking gender equity work.

Details

This is Australia's first accredited gender equity qualification, and is designed to prepare individuals and organisations to undertake gender equity work and meet the requirements for organisations outlined in the Gender Equality Act 2020 for Victorian public sector, universities and local councils, and for the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 for relevant public employers in Australia.

This qualification is includes self-paced learning activities and face-to-face workshops for demonstration of skill.

You will undertake assessments focusing on knowledge and theory, project work incorporating undertaking gender assessment, and developing, implementing and monitoring a gender strategy, policy and practice in the workplace.

Throughout this qualification, students can expect:

  • weekly one-hour facilitated online sessions
  • fortnightly full day workshops
  • self-paced learning and activities online.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

The program is designed with three modules: 

  • Module 1: Developing and applying a gender lens (7 weeks) 
  • Module 2: Promoting gender equity within a work context (10 weeks) 
  • Module 3: Undertaking gender equity work (9 weeks) 

Choose your own depth of learning by taking all three modules, completing two modules, or just Module 1 (you must complete Module 1 to undertake Modules 2 or 3).

  • Module 1: Developing and applying a gender lens   
    • VU22770 Develop a gender lens to support gender equity work – Understand gender equity values and requirements.   
    • VU22771 Apply a gender lens to own work role – Identify ways to better contribute to gender equity.  

You can exit on completion of Module 1 or continue your study with Module 2 and/or Module 3.

  • Module 2: Promoting gender equity within a work context  
    • VU22772 Communicate effectively with gender equity stakeholders – Develop and communicate gender equity key messages.  
    • VU22773 Establish support for gender equity work – Engage different stakeholders to support gender equity work. 
    • VU22774 Explore gender equity policy and practice in the workplace – Identify gender inequity in organisational policies and practices.  
  • Module 3: Undertaking gender equity work 
    • VU22775 Undertake a gender assessment within a work context – Determine the gender-responsiveness of a policy, program, service, or project.  
    • VU22776 Develop gender equity strategies – Develop strategies that contribute to gender equity in a work context. 
    • VU22777 Implement and monitor gender equity strategies – Build strategies to achieve successful gender equity outcomes in a work context.

Admissions

There are no minimum academic entry requirements. You must be at least 18 years of age by the commencement date of the program.

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.

Free at TAFE

As part of the Free at TAFE initiative, the Victorian Government is currently waiving course fees for select skill sets. Students who are assessed as eligible for a Government subsidised place will not be charged a tuition fee.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place. To find out if you are eligible for a government subsidised place, follow the steps at How to check if you are eligible.

  • 2024 government subsidised place: Free 
  • 2024 full-fee place: AU$6,000* per annum

Annual fee adjustment

The student tuition fees as displayed by the fee finder are indicative only and subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Payments and refunds

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.

If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
