Since opening in 2007, the RMIT Design Archives at RMIT University has assembled an extensive collection relating to Melbourne design and designers, in diverse disciplines such as automotive history, architecture, fashion, graphic design, industrial design and textile design. The collections are both digital and material, representing historical and contemporary practice, which together tell the story of Melbourne’s design heritage. The Archives uses these collections to support curators, writers, academics and students in their research into Melbourne’s Design history. The RMIT Design Archives plays an important role in the academic programs of the University. Our aim is to create transformative experiences for students.
Archives staff are constantly working to make the collection accessible to the public both physically and digitally. Our collections website is available for all to explore. People who wish to view the collections in person can do so by making an appointment with the Archives staff. Other opportunities to explore the Archives are available during public events such as Melbourne Design Week, Open House Melbourne and Melbourne Rare Book Week. As part of our work in supporting scholars and fostering intellectual inquiry, we also publish a Journal that focuses on original and contemporary research into Melbourne’s design practice.
We hope that you will support the Design Archives by assisting us through your donation to digitise, preserve and publish the collections on-line. Digitising and preserving the Archives’ collection will facilitate its use by the students and will enhance and enrich educational programs at RMIT University, and further afield. Every donation you give will contribute to the RMIT Design Archives collections and is 100% tax deductible.
