The School of Education supports current and future educators to develop critical skills needed within contemporary teaching and learning.
With over 50 years of experience, the School has an established reputation for providing educational and vocational leadership in creating knowledge for the future. Across RMIT’s Melbourne City and Bundoora campuses, the school offers a wide range of programs and courses starting from pre-university qualifications, including certificates and diplomas, all the way to postgraduate degrees by coursework and research.
The Master of Teaching Practice programs are graduate entry initial teacher education programs for people who are looking to change careers and work as a qualified teacher in the primary or secondary school sectors. The programs build on your undergraduate studies to develop teaching specialisations – in Primary: STEM, Maths, Literacy, or a wide range of Secondary method areas, through core generalist Method courses.
Each program consists of 16 courses which run across the two years of study. Within this, there are four placement blocks which total 60 days of mentored, school-based industry experience. These blocks are scaffolded by coursework to provide you with the pedagogical knowledge and skills required by a practising teacher. Placements will be arranged by the School of Education Professional Experience team during a scheduled placement period.
Classes are run primarily face to face with online components to support learning. Class sizes allow for maximum interaction with peers and teaching staff. The ability to interact with others in the room has a positive effect on learning and your sense of belonging to the Program. The programs are centrally located in the Melbourne city campus and are easy to get to via public transport. The central location provides students with many opportunities to participate fully in university life. The programs promote classroom ready graduates who are passionate about teaching and learning and committed to achieving excellent learning outcomes in their future classrooms.
The Bachelor of Education equips you with the most relevant and up-to-date knowledge and skills to be 'classroom ready' and to gain employment. RMIT has one of the highest employability rates of Victorian Teacher Education providers with over 95% of our student’s finding employment after graduating. (Based on Graduate Outcomes Survey 2019 - 2021).
Our program intake is kept small to ensure that we can provide you with a personalised learning experience based on your unique needs and interests. We will support you to develop your own teacher identity, agency and leadership in learning and teaching.
You can choose from streams in general primary, early childhood, disability inclusion, or physical education and sport. You'll also have the opportunity to swap streams should you change your mind about where you would like to specialise. Through your subject selection, you can also deeply explore English, Mathematics, and STEM as specialisations.
In our program you will experience a variety of contemporary and interactive learning and teaching approaches. You won't attend lectures; all your classes are in the form of small group learning environments and workshops, giving you a hands-on and inclusive experience from day one.
Combining hands-on experiences with theoretical learning, you will build the skills you need to be an effective and influential teacher in a variety of settings. We offer you 80+ days of professional placement, giving you the opportunity to gain real-world experience. There are opportunities to conduct placement in a variety of educational and professional settings, including those in rural, regional, and metropolitan areas.
RMIT has strong and active relationships with many partner schools, communities and enterprises, which help us to find you the most valuable professional experience placements.
Complete your program in 3.5 years and look for employment as a graduate when the education sector often advertises new appointments and whilst others are still completing their degrees.

We have ensured that from Year 1, professional experience is integrated in the program with coursework. In this way, you can draw on theoretical frameworks or practices that you learn about at university and adapt them in response to specific classroom contexts at any given time. Our placements are scaffolded throughout our program to further develop your skills and practice in teaching and learning each time you go on placement. For example, in your first placement, you will be placed in a small group in a partner school where you will be supported by a high-quality teacher mentor. During your placement, workshops are taught by a school-based teacher mentor to help you to link to what you are learning.
This approach to professional placements has evolved through our work in the Teaching Academies of Professional Practice (Department of Education and Training Victoria), where we have established strong partnerships with several schools. By the end of the program, you will undertake the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment where you will independently complete a whole planning, teaching and assessment cycle, demonstrate how you use evidence of student learning to target your teaching and show that you are ‘classroom ready’.
This degree prepares you for a career as a Health and Physical Education teacher, providing you with a qualification to teach in secondary schools.
RMIT Health, Physical Education and Sport (HPES) students are recognised by industry leaders. Student study three teaching methods (health, PE and one elective area), and gain sports coaching experience using our world-class sporting facilities and synthetic playing fields. Students complete school-based placements/professional practices in each semester with a focus on developing skills to teach social and emotional learning, mental health, physical activity, and wellbeing.
Placements allow the integration of theory with practice, developing your teaching skills throughout the duration of the course, to ensure you graduate career ready.
RMIT HPES staff are dynamic, highly experienced, strongly connected to industry and student-centred teachers - many are current practitioners in schools. Our program supports successful transition to university life through small teaching groups, a mentoring program (year 3 students support year 1 students), camp and school-based placements.
The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education (GD204) program is designed based on 3B’s Belonging, Being and Becoming from Australia’s National “Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)” for early childhood. This program is designed to support you to work as a professional early childhood teacher (ECT) in the early childhood contexts. You will be equipped with the necessary critical and pedagogical strategies to become an effective teacher across a range of early childhood settings. Based on EYLF, this program prepares you to extend and enrich learning across the curriculum for infants, toddlers, and young children from birth to five years. You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in any discipline for enrolling this program. International Degrees need to be assessed at Australian equivalency. The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education has English language requirements which are specific to this degree.
GD204 is externally accredited by the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as an early childhood teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). At the end of your studies, you'll be qualified to teach in early childhood setting in Victoria (birth to 5 years) and hold transferrable skills to work here. If you are interested in teaching outside of Victoria or overseas, registration will be subject to the criteria of the relevant state or overseas accrediting authorities. You are encouraged to contact the relevant authority to determine if this qualification will allow you to teach in their jurisdiction.
This is a one-year program. You have option to enrol in part time and full-time study mode. Classes are schedule both online and f2f. There are five courses in this program (flexi mode). We offer you 60 days of professional placement, giving you the opportunity to gain real-world experience. RMIT has strong and active relationships with many partners from early childhood services, which help us to find you the most valuable professional experience placements. Three courses among five courses are placement component. Placement team allocate students placement if they are in Melbourne metropolitan area. We use variety of learning experiences to teach the courses. For example, you will engage in different class activities, videos, readings and problem-based case studies. Upon completion of the program, you will become an innovative and attuned professional teacher in the field of early years education (birth to five years) with an edu-portfolio that represents your professional narrative that you will be able to share proudly with potential employers. You will also have the knowledge, skills and experience to work in private enterprise, government agencies and community based early childhood education settings locally and globally. RMIT has been educating, training and certifying careers practitioner since 1975. Our graduates lead the way in providing career development services in education, human resources, community job centres, corporations, and private practice. With Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) competency specific curriculum, on completion of this certificate you satisfy the educational requirements for membership of professional associations including CICA and the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA). The program has long-standing ties to industry bodies such as the Victorian Department of Education and Training and the NSW Department of Education; and is a preferred provider for secondary school careers practitioners funded by DET study grants.
Drawing on Design Thinking and Narrative Therapy principles, the Graduate Certificate reflects up to date ideas about career development and its place in a changing world. Combining hands-on experiences with theoretical learning, you will receive personalised support to build the skills you need to be an effective and influential careers practitioner. This certificate is delivered online, allowing you to structure your study to fit with your own career and life commitments from day one.
The graduate certificate can be completed over 1 year (2 courses per semester) or over 2 years (1 course per semester).
There is not a weekly class timetable as the subject material for each course is self-contained within on-line modules. In this way, the program is "self-paced" with assignment deadlines. You will be allocated a Course Leader to provide personalised support with the material and assignments as well as ensuring your learning experiences are meeting your unique needs and interests.
You will have opportunities to meet in small group learning environments and workshops on-line. In addition, each subject includes all student sessions over the semester with the Program Coordinator and Course Leaders to review course material and provide information on upcoming assignments.
You will experience a variety of contemporary and interactive learning approaches focused on the practical application of career development competencies in a diverse range of professional settings. With a number of the assessment tasks providing an opportunity to choose a specialist area of careers practice and supported by a 3-day industry placement, you will develop career development skills targeted to your professional interest and needs.
Underpinned by Design Thinking you will find the course material and the assessment tasks, provide you with the practical problem-solving skills required to meet the challenges of career practice in a changing and uncertain world of work.
A key feature of the graduate certificate is the Narrative Counselling Skills Workshop which provides a 3-day (or equivalent weekly schedule) of intensive group training. Offering practical experience under the guidance of one of our committed Industry Expert team members, you will develop high-level communication and counselling skills which are essential to effective and transformative professional career development practice.
